This is El Grecos masterpiece, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz. The painting is divided into two distinct parts, representing the earthly and the divine realms.
In the lower section, the earthly realm, a solemn funeral ceremony is taking place for the recently deceased Don Gonzalo Ruiz de la Oz, Count of Orgaz. He is depicted lying in a coffin, lavishly dressed, with two saints, Saint Stephen and Saint Augustine, shown miraculously descending from heaven to assist in his burial. Saint Stephen, identifiable by his bishops robes and martyrs palm, is shown holding the body while Saint Augustine, similarly robed, blesses it. Around the coffin are mourners and witnesses, many of whom are portraits of prominent citizens of Toledo and prominent figures associated with the church. A young boy, presumably the son of the Count, stands witnessing the event.
The upper section depicts the celestial realm. Here, Christ is enthroned in glory, flanked by the Virgin Mary on his left and John the Baptist on his right. A host of saints, apostles, and angels surround them, all appearing amidst swirling clouds and ethereal light. El Grecos characteristic elongated figures and dramatic use of color are evident here, creating a sense of spiritual ecstasy and transcendence.
