Fairs have always been central to the pastime of many villagers. Fairs were the place where useful purchases could be made, and often only fairs were the place where some things could be produced. In addition, the fair was a place of entertainment, various contests, and socializing. This is exactly the kind of fair depicted in the picture. Not a single fairgoer’s face can be seen by the viewer. All the fair-goers wore their best festive clothes - how could they not, for the fairs were truly a festive event for them.
Description of Boris Kustodiev’s painting The Fair
Fairs have always been central to the pastime of many villagers. Fairs were the place where useful purchases could be made, and often only fairs were the place where some things could be produced. In addition, the fair was a place of entertainment, various contests, and socializing. This is exactly the kind of fair depicted in the picture.
Not a single fairgoer’s face can be seen by the viewer. All the fair-goers wore their best festive clothes - how could they not, for the fairs were truly a festive event for them. The women had smart dresses and patterned shawls, the men had new slippers and beautiful caftans.
The two elderly men in the foreground are discussing something furiously. Most likely they are talking about the previous fairs. Children are habitually staring at sweets and toys. There’s a girl clutching a new doll in her hand and a boy chewing sugar. Most of the women are picking out and trying on beautiful patterned scarves. Two young ladies are discussing the merchandise on the counter among themselves. On the other side of the canvas, the newfound indicators are choosing household useful items - rakes, shovels, and wooden buckets. A woman tries to bargain with the rake seller.
The young boys are choosing musical instruments. Their choice is a harmonica. They are in no hurry to buy it, first trying out the sound of the new musical instrument.
A vibrant life is going on everywhere. All the visitors are lively and cheerful, talking and discussing everything that is happening around them, discussing the goods that have been brought, advising and bargaining.
And behind the fairgrounds stretches a village. Gray houses, sagging roofs, a church, and a gray, gloomy, low-hanging sky. Pretty soon the bright fair day will be over, and all the buyers will go back to their old houses, back to their old, measured and gray life.

The composition is structured around a central group of older men engaged in what appears to be an animated discussion or negotiation. Their faces, rendered with considerable detail, convey a mixture of seriousness and joviality. They are dressed in traditional attire – dark trousers tucked into high boots, layered shirts, and distinctive headwear – which immediately establishes the cultural context of the scene. The women present display similarly detailed costumes, including intricately patterned scarves and dresses that contribute to the overall richness of color and texture. A young boy, positioned near the foreground, seems absorbed in his own world, adding a touch of youthful innocence to the dynamic composition.
Behind this immediate throng rises a townscape anchored by a prominent church with multiple domes, its architecture indicative of a specific regional style. The sky above is overcast, lending a muted quality to the light and contributing to a slightly melancholic atmosphere that contrasts with the vibrancy of the market scene.
The artist’s use of color is noteworthy; while the palette is generally subdued, there are flashes of bright hues in the clothing and textiles, drawing the eye and emphasizing the festive nature of the occasion. The brushwork appears loose and expressive, contributing to a sense of immediacy and capturing the energy of the crowd.
Subtly, the painting seems to explore themes of community, tradition, and the passage of time. The older men’s interaction could be interpreted as representing the continuity of cultural practices passed down through generations. The church in the background serves not only as a visual landmark but also as a symbolic representation of faith and enduring values within this society. The overall impression is one of a self-contained world, rich in custom and steeped in history, captured at a moment of vibrant social interaction.
