SUM OF SUMS
1
The organ – a root system
Of music that strives upwards,
Leaving architecture
Below, where our days are intertwined.
But man is also a system,
Or the sum of many elements.
A reliable core theme –
Is given by the voice of the depths.
And the sum of sums – is the universes depths,
And at the same time – it is itself.
And the living spirit will generously
Reveal golden treasures to us.
2
Starting from what exists –
Can sometimes be such a burden.
The Gothic triumph
Is celebrated by angular Bremen.
A nest of roofs, cathedrals, and branches
Encloses the old city.
You cannot do without news
Of your own fantasies, if you are young.
Looking inward, into your own consciousness
Reveals such depths!
Peaceful existence
Can be frightening like a black abyss.
Is there fat on your soul? No, its light,
But I regret not seeing its radiance.
Sometimes just one line
Can grant a visa to vast spaces.
To such a distance, where clouds
Give their felt to the lowlands.
Then – until now, I havent even thought of them –
Magnificent gardens will open up,
Where all the fruits of life ripen.

Below this elevated position, a group of figures are scattered across the foreground. They appear to be asleep, sprawled in various poses, suggesting a state of profound slumber rather than peaceful rest. Their clothing appears disheveled, contributing to an overall sense of chaos and vulnerability. A dark-skinned individual, positioned on the left edge of the scene, observes the unfolding events with what seems like a mixture of awe and apprehension. He is partially obscured by foliage, suggesting his role as a witness rather than a direct participant.
The background is dominated by a fiery red sky, punctuated by the silhouettes of trees and dense vegetation. The light source appears to emanate from behind the central figure, creating a stark contrast between illumination and shadow that heightens the dramatic effect. A date – 1518 – is inscribed in numerals at the top right corner, providing a temporal anchor for the depicted event.
The subtexts within this painting are layered and complex. The slumbering figures likely represent the guards who were present at the tomb, their sleep symbolizing the unexpectedness of the resurrection and the inadequacy of earthly power to contain divine intervention. The central figure’s radiant appearance suggests not merely physical rebirth but also a spiritual transcendence. The inclusion of the dark-skinned observer introduces an element of perspective; he may symbolize those outside the immediate circle of believers who are witnessing this momentous event, or perhaps represent a broader humanity grappling with faith and doubt.
The overall effect is one of profound religious significance conveyed through a dynamic arrangement of figures and a masterful use of light and shadow. The artist’s choice to depict the scene within a naturalistic setting, rather than an idealized landscape, lends it a sense of immediacy and realism, while simultaneously emphasizing the extraordinary nature of the event being portrayed.
