EL GRECO
He mastered the secrets of Cretan artisans,
And fortified Mannerism with his skill.
A golden prism is calculated,
Through it, the heavens are visible.
To reveal the mysteries of the firmament,
With the gaze of saints, and even Jesus,
He could – master of craft and taste.
But where there is passion, there can be no smoothness.
His views, condensed with light, sorrow, and everything,
Are saturated with intensity.
Through them, the triumph of suffering
Is expressed. We rarely encounter such things.
Behold, the Savior of the world. Look –
The gaze burns with infrared hues.
And the dawn of spiritual painting
Will dictate its laws here.
The height of Toledo – the entire city
Is raised to the temple by a powerful staircase.
Here is a landscape. Simultaneously, its a message,
But how can such a message be contained in a simple frame?
More than just painting – layers
Given by El Greco. Much more.
You live – and thats why you suffer.
Your soul is tormented by pain. But pain itself
Speaks of life. You are not a saint.
You look at a saint, feeling
Shame for your own life. And yet, there is no other way –
Where are you, golden one?
Spiritual gold attracts.
I remember the gaze of Christ again.
The verticality of life calls for change,
How to follow it – alas, I do not know.
Какие красивые, глубокие стихи!

Here we see a man with a beard and long hair, crowned with thorns. His face displays a complex mixture of suffering and determination; the brow is furrowed, yet his eyes are directed upwards, suggesting a spiritual focus beyond immediate pain. The artist rendered the skin tone as pale and luminous, contrasting sharply with the darker hues of his garments and the somber background. A crimson tunic clings to his body, revealing the musculature beneath, which contributes to the sense of physical exertion. He leans heavily on the cross, his hand gripping it firmly – a gesture that conveys both support and a desperate clinging to something beyond himself.
The drapery is handled with considerable dynamism; the folds cascade around him in swirling patterns, creating a visual rhythm that draws the eye upwards towards his face. The artist’s use of light and shadow is particularly striking. A strong source of illumination highlights certain areas – the face, hands, and upper torso – while leaving others shrouded in darkness. This chiaroscuro effect intensifies the emotional impact of the scene and creates a sense of spiritual drama.
Beyond the immediate depiction of physical suffering, the painting seems to explore themes of sacrifice and redemption. The upward gaze suggests a connection with something divine, implying that the pain endured is part of a larger, transcendent purpose. The embrace of the cross – a gesture of both burden and acceptance – hints at a willingness to bear an immense weight for the sake of others. The overall effect is one of profound pathos and spiritual intensity, inviting contemplation on themes of faith, suffering, and hope.
