The painting depicts The Last Supper, a pivotal event from Christian theology where Jesus shares his final meal with his apostles before his crucifixion.
What I see:
The scene is set at a long table, laden with food and drink meant to symbolize the meal. Jesus is centrally positioned, appearing serene and with a slight gesture of comfort towards a young apostle who has fallen asleep. The apostles are arranged around the table, displaying a range of emotions and reactions – some in animated discussion, others pensive, and one appearing to doubt or question. Their gestures and expressions convey a spectrum of human responses to Jesus pronouncement that one of them will betray him that night. The lighting focuses on the central figures, creating a dramatic and intimate atmosphere. In the foreground, near the tables end, two domestic animals, a dog and a cat, are visible, adding an element of ordinary life to the extraordinary event.
