Shishkin’s famous work "On the Wild North" was created in 1890 and is the artistic embodiment of the motif of solitude, praised by Lermontov in his poetic work "The Pine." It bears some resemblance to the romantic painting of Kuindzhi, with whom the author was on friendly terms at the time.
In the midst of the cold darkness, surrounded by snow and ice, on the bare and inaccessible top of the cliffs rises a proud and lonely tree. All its surroundings are a black deep gorge, illuminated by the cold moonlight, and a boundless expanse of snow.
We can see how the harsh northern nature captivated the artist with its completely unearthly, fairy-tale-like beauty and incredible strength of spirit. With the help of a rich color gamut of shades and transitions, the master managed to convey both a sense of cold stillness and oppression of loneliness.
And in this frosty kingdom, at first glance, there is nothing alive anymore. But the lonely tree continues to live, in spite of the frost, winds and snows.
The mighty pine tree is frozen in silent oblivion, waiting for better times. How much pride and dignity is in this silhouette. Heavy snow mounds lurk on its strong branches, like an embroidered gold robe on a priest’s shoulders. And a snow-white hat is perched on top of it. It practically reaches the snow clouds and merges with them in flight across the overcast sky. There is a feeling of cold stupor and dreary silence all around.
One can’t help but wonder what the proud tree on the rock is dreaming about in this harsh time. Perhaps about a close and kindred soul, as lofty in its loneliness? Unfortunately, we will never know, but there is a sense of admiration for the pine tree, which does not submit to any hardship. It is probably a symbol of human pride and dignity, without which a person cannot climb to the top, much less stand on it.

Shishkin is a wonderful Russian artist who managed to convey all the splendor of Russian nature in his paintings. The painting In the Wild North is unlike the pastoral meadows, clear forest glades, and golden groves that abound in his homeland. Here, the artist shows us a completely different Russia: wild, cold, and boundless. But not malicious; there is its own charm in this cold – icy, patterned, snowy.
When you look at this painting, you involuntarily begin to pity the poor little fir tree: its branches-claws are bent, as if broken by the weight of the snow, its head hangs dejectedly down. It immediately becomes clear what this picture is about; its more like a portrait – a portrait of a lonely fir tree growing in the distant North. The overall composition emphasizes the mood of the main character: a dark sky, low heavy clouds, and patches of dim light on the snow. And far below, an impenetrable blackness. A feeling of awe and joyful wonder! Thats what emanates from this painting. Lush, strong, free, unyielding – she is! A beautiful, slender pine tree that has grown, practically on a rock... She towers above the entire forest. She stands tall in the harsh winter, but it holds no power over her. And indeed, over no one... neither wind nor blizzard! Her branches are sprawling and strong; they can withstand many layers of wet snow and ice.
She stands as if at the edge of the world... majestically, peacefully...
When you look at this painting, you almost feel the fresh, biting frost, and the intoxicating feeling of vastness and wonder! Wonder at this proud solitude, wonder at the fullness and completeness.... And its not just that she is realistically executed; its that she is extraordinarily realistically felt by the artist himself... He didnt give us a painting; he gave us feelings.
Everyone has seen something similar in their lives, and its that moment when time and thoughts stop, when there is enough of everything, and everything is complete, when it seems strange to want anything else...
