The painting depicts a woman of refined elegance, identified as Lady in a Blue Dress. She is presented in a three-quarter pose against a dark, almost black, background, which serves to highlight her luminous skin and the rich textures of her attire. Her face is turned slightly towards the viewer, with her gaze direct and her expression serene, hinting at a sense of inner composure and social standing.
Her elaborate dress is the focal point, a deep blue velvet fabric adorned with intricate patterns, possibly floral or geometric motifs, subtly woven into the material. The sleeves are particularly striking, featuring voluminous puffed sections in a rich burgundy or deep red material, densely gathered and adorned with off-white or pearl-like decorations at the elbows. The neckline is broad and low, revealing her décolletage, with a white chemise peeking through, trimmed with delicate lace.
She wears two prominent gold necklaces. The longer one, a delicate chain, rests against her chest, while a more substantial, ornate chain with a pendant or tassels cascades down her torso, drawing the eye. Pearl earrings dangle from her ears, and her hair is elaborately styled with coiled braids and a decorative headband, suggesting an occasion of some importance. Her left hand is visible, delicately holding the end of a beaded, golden rosary or similar ornate accessory, her fingers delicately posed.
The subtexts of the painting can be interpreted in several ways:
