At the Tretyakov Gallery, the painting made an indelible impression, especially the reflection of the sky in the puddles. I stood there like a statue for half an hour. Its impossible to believe that this was painted by an 18-year-old boy!
This young man, just 18 years old, stirred up all of St. Petersburg with his very first works.
Kramskoy wrote about him. He studied in such a way that it seemed as though he was living a second life, and that all that remained for him was to recall something long forgotten. He worked passionately; apathy and absentmindedness never crept into him when he had a pencil in his hand, or rather, he could not work mechanically, without the involvement of his heart. His strictness towards himself reached its limits, and I can attest that absolutely everything he did during his short life, he considered unworthy.
Почувствовал запах мокрых сосен.

In the foreground, on the left side of the road, two men are working with logs. One man is seated, perhaps resting, while the other appears to be actively engaged with the felled wood. They are dressed in simple, rustic clothing. Further up the road, a woman with a red headscarf, carrying bundles on her back, walks with a dog. She is heading towards the village, her bright scarf a stark contrast to the earthy tones of the landscape. The village consists of several small houses with red roofs, nestled amongst trees and fields, suggesting a humble, agricultural community. A wooden fence marks the boundary of a field.
The subtext of the painting lies in the contrast between the lingering elements of the storm and the signs of life and renewal. The muddy road and the still-heavy clouds evoke the recent turmoil, but the bright patches of blue sky, the woman and dog walking towards home, the activity of the men, and the tranquil village all symbolize resilience, hope, and the return to normalcy after hardship. The landscape itself, with its trees and open fields, speaks to the enduring power of nature and the simple beauty of rural life. The title, After the Storm, explicitly points to this theme of overcoming adversity and the peace that follows.
