Not everyone knows what this ritual signifies, or what the artist Konstantin Makovsky intended to express in his work. After drinking from the cup, it is customary for the woman to be kissed by a young nobleman. If she blushes after being kissed by her lover, the young nobleman, the husband, an older nobleman, will thus expose her infidelity.
The other day, I was at an exhibition at the Russian Museum and saw this beautiful painting from the Cookbook collection. I really liked it.
The painting is truly remarkable. And the exhibition deserves all the praise and attention it receives.
I dont understand what many people liked about the exhibition. The Russian Museum has so many wonderful paintings by outstanding Russian artists, but for this exhibition, they selected modern junk. Of course, its now called art, just like those crazy opera performances.
The exhibition was also disappointing: classical art is represented very little, while theres an excessive amount of meat displays and similar things.
You cannot comment Why?
The painting Kissing Ceremony by Konstantin Makovsky depicts a scene from old Russian customs, likely related to weddings or betrothals.
What I see:
The central focus is a group of people in a richly decorated hall, suggesting a formal or noble setting. On the left, a procession of elegantly dressed individuals, both men and women in traditional Russian attire, approaches. They appear to be presenting something. A young woman, centrally positioned and adorned in a beautiful, colorful dress, holds a tray with golden cups. A man in a dark velvet hat and a green and gold tunic, with a beard, extends his hand to receive a cup from her. He looks towards the figures on the right side of the painting.
The right side of the painting reveals a banquet scene. A distinguished, long-bearded old man in opulent robes is seated, perhaps the patriarch or a figure of authority. He is being attended to by a small, jester-like figure. Several other men are visible, some engaged in conversation, others appearing somewhat disheveled, suggesting a feast with drinking. In the background, there are dogs resting, and the room is adorned with ornate architectural elements, windows with decorative grilles, and various household items, all contributing to an atmosphere of historical grandeur. The lighting is warm and dramatic, highlighting the key figures and details.
