On the desk, there are remnants of a humble breakfast: bread, cheese, and butter. Beside it, a blue lamp casts a soft glow, illuminating the objects on the desk, including a box of cigarettes. A chair is pushed slightly away from the desk, and on it rests a newspaper. The room itself appears somewhat neglected, with a general sense of disorder: books are scattered, and a woven vase stands on the floor. A small, fluffy white dog occupies the foreground, looking up attentively. The background reveals a door and a hint of opulent, yet worn, furnishings, suggesting a once-grand but now fading lifestyle.
The painting is rich in subtext, offering a commentary on the social and economic realities of the time. The aristocrat is clearly not living up to his title. His gaudy attire, particularly the bright red trousers, suggests a pretentiousness that contrasts sharply with the meager breakfast and the overall state of his surroundings. The juxtaposition of aspiring luxury with evident decline is a key theme. The young mans posture and expression, caught in a moment of surprise or apprehension, might allude to a precarious financial situation, perhaps the interruption of a solitary, self-indulgent morning by an unexpected demand or circumstance. The painting subtly critiques the superficiality of social climbing and the illusions of grandeur that can mask underlying poverty or struggle. Fedotov uses humor and irony to portray the stark reality behind the facade of aristocracy, making it a poignant social satire.
