Description of Claude Monet’s painting Corner of the Garden at Montgeron
Monet’s painting The Corner of the Garden at Mongeronne was painted in 1876-1877. It is now held in the collection holdings of the State Hermitage Museum.
Looking at the painting, we see a beautiful, peaceful garden with some mysteries and riddles hidden in the thickets. Lush and luxurious bushes blooming with vivid colors: orange-red and yellow hues.
It feels as if the painter applied the colors in a chaotic order. The picture is dominated by yellowish-green tones, creating the illusion of reality, as if it was not a painted image, but a photograph. The green hues give the garden a breath of spring and warmth.
The colors seem to play with each other. They double up, split into shades, forming the characteristic coloring of this work.
The garden looks like a beautiful blooming bouquet: expressive, airy, lush. Color rendering is both realistic and expressive at the same time. The landscape is like a sketch created by an artist in a short period of time. Hence there is a sense of impressionism, light, bright and sunny mood.
One might think that the painting lacks some clarity and sharpness, due to the fact that the image is constantly in motion. It creates the impression of unclear, floating figures, mysterious and ghostly. The lighting itself in the creation is a bit dim, one might even say dusky.
The painting gives the viewer an impression of tranquility and calm. There is no hustle and bustle and daily problems. This place is a real corner of tranquil nature and measured life, silence, kind, pure feelings and thoughts.
Even the colors themselves in the picture are light, clean and open, without any color experiments. But still we can’t say that the image turned out too simple. Impressionism makes the landscape look real, whole and complex.
There is a great variety of flowers and greenery growing in the garden. Garden trees occupy the main part of the landscape. Their image is mesmerizing, immersing the viewer in the soft comfort of their beautiful forms. Like the clouds, they carry a lightness and airiness, filling the entire space. At the same time the picture is close to reality itself, sometimes even overshadowing it with its beauty and brightness.
