Good afternoon, I am contacting you for a consultation regarding a painting my sister inherited. Its an oil painting on canvas depicting a woman reminiscent of the Summer painting. Seventeen years ago, she took this painting to the Tretyakov Gallery, where experts confirmed that it was a very old painting, over 100 years old. At that time, they didnt know about the artist Bisson and valued it at $10,000. I would like to know how much authentic paintings by this artist have been sold at auction, specifically Summer. If my sister truly has an authentic painting, what could its value be? The approximate size of the painting is 65x90 cm.

The setting appears to be a meadow or garden, rendered indistinct by atmospheric perspective. The background dissolves into a swirling mist, punctuated by the suggestion of foliage and, faintly visible through the haze, what seems to be a winged figure – perhaps an angel or allegorical representation. This distant presence adds a layer of ethereal quality to the scene.
The woman’s expression is complex; it conveys a sense of melancholy tinged with longing. Her gaze is directed slightly upwards and outwards, as if she is observing something beyond the viewers perception. The way she holds her hands, one extended towards the flowers at her feet and the other reaching forward, implies an interaction with the natural world, but also a desire for connection or solace.
The color palette reinforces this mood of wistful beauty. Soft pinks, purples, and greens dominate, creating a sense of tranquility while simultaneously hinting at underlying sadness. The diffused light contributes to the dreamlike atmosphere, obscuring details and inviting contemplation.
Subtextually, the painting seems to explore themes of longing, innocence, and the relationship between humanity and nature. The presence of the winged figure suggests a spiritual dimension, implying that the woman is caught between earthly concerns and a higher realm. The flowers, symbols of beauty and fragility, further emphasize this sense of delicate balance and fleeting moments. It’s possible to interpret the work as an allegory for lost innocence or a yearning for something unattainable.
