This striking self-portrait by Frida Kahlo, titled Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, presents the artist in a lush, jungle-like setting. Kahlos characteristic unibrow and intense gaze confront the viewer directly. Her hair is elaborately styled, adorned with two white butterflies and nestled amongst large, dark green leaves and a larger, more pale leaf shape behind her right ear.
Around her neck, a thorny vine wraps like a necklace, with sharp thorns drawing blood. From this vine hangs a dead hummingbird, its wings outstretched. To her left, a black monkey perches on her shoulder, its form partially obscured by shadow and leaves, while a black cat with piercing green eyes is perched on her right shoulder, its presence more clearly defined.
The subtexts in this painting are rich and layered, typical of Kahlos deeply personal and symbolic work.
