On the left, several women are gathered, dressed in flowing Grecian robes. The central figure, presumably Sappho, is leaning forward with her hands clasped, her gaze directed towards something or someone out of the frame. She wears a delicate laurel wreath on her head, suggesting a theme of poetry or victory. To her left, another woman also gazes intently, while a third, adorned with a more elaborate floral crown, looks towards the right side of the painting. Behind them, inscribed on marble structures, are names and what appear to be dedications, hinting at a place of honor or remembrance for poets. One inscription is clearly legible as ATHIS. Other inscriptions are partially visible: KO[LO]FON, MYR[IN]OS, and FANASTORIA. A statue of a draped figure is also present.
On the right, a young man, Alcaeus, is seated on a chair, playing a lyre. He is dressed in a pale pink chiton. The lyre itself is ornate, with detailed carvings on its base, including a scene that seems to depict gods or heroes. The inscription on the lyre reads APOLONOS KITHARA. Behind him stands a marble bust and weathered trees with gnarled branches reach into the upper part of the composition, framing a tranquil blue sea under a muted sky.
The painting evokes a sense of classical beauty, artistic contemplation, and the legacy of ancient poets. The contrast between the contemplative women and the performing musician suggests a dialogue between reception and creation of art, or perhaps a gathering to honor artistic achievements. The sea and serene setting contribute to an atmosphere of timelessness and idealized beauty, characteristic of Neoclassical and Academic art. The inscriptions on the marble serve not only as historical markers but also as visual cues to the importance of these ancient figures and places in the realm of poetry and culture.
