What beauty! And what talent!
In Italy, Levitan painted many sketches. Spring in Italy depicts a rosy cloud of blossoming trees surrounding a small village nestled at the foot of purple mountains. Above this transparent scene of natures awakening looms the snow-capped peak of the Alps.
Later, Levitan gifted this wonderful sketch to Ermolova on her birthday. He met the great Russian actress in the salon of Kuvshinnikova.

The title Italian Spring in February provides a crucial layer of meaning. February in most parts of Italy is still winter, and while some southern regions might experience early blooms, the significant snow on the mountains suggests higher altitudes or an atypical season. This juxtaposition of snow-capped peaks and early spring blossoms creates a powerful contrast, highlighting the unique microclimates and the diverse beauty of the Italian landscape.
The subtext seems to be about the anticipation and arrival of spring, even in a month often associated with winters grip. The blooming flowers symbolize renewal, hope, and the fleeting beauty of nature. The painting captures a moment of transition, where the strength and permanence of winter (the mountains) coexist with the delicate and transient beauty of springs first signs. It evokes a feeling of optimism and the promise of warmer days and vibrant life to come, all within the context of a specific, perhaps unusually mild, Italian locale.
