Description of Isaac Levitan’s painting The Valley of the River
Isaac Levitan was a famous Russian landscape painter. Contemporaries rightly called the artist a master of the "mood landscape." Levitan lived a short, tormented life. He left a rich collection of Russian landscapes, which are popular abroad.
His works are imbued with a reverent love for his native land, as well as the embodiment of true Russian beauty in all its magnificence. The painting "Valley of the River" refers to the most fruitful period in his work. It was at the end of the 19th century that he painted his most famous canvases, such as: "March," "Golden Autumn," and "Nenyufars." Subsequently they were bought by Pavel Tretyakov for his gallery.
Most of all Levitan loved autumn, it is evident in his paintings. Levitan wrote more than 100 autumn landscapes and sketches. The Valley of the River - a sketch written in pastel, unmistakably conveys the mood of an autumn day. Not without reason Isaac Levitan captured on canvas the river, which lazily runs into the distance, filled from the pouring rains.
The river has always been a source of pride for Russians. More than once artists have turned their eyes toward this mighty element, which was the source of life and later profit. But the river, which Levitan depicted in his sketch, is peaceful and serene. Only water in combination with the sky, could express the fullness of feelings, overflowing, the artist’s soul.
The sky, with its extraordinarily colorful and light filled, bears a secondary piling up of the subject line, creating an atmosphere of anticipation.
The artist has faithfully conveyed the beauty of the Russian wilderness. In the foreground we see a birch grove painted with autumn colors. What is striking in his work is the incredibly subtle vision of what is happening.

The painting is refined, just like the artist himself.
Winter is approaching again.
Some remote corner, lost to the whims of a capricious sky,
Will disappear into impassable mud.
Sediment will settle in the lakes.
Above them, smoke from chimneys will rise.
In the cold embrace of thaw,
People seeking warmth and life will gather around the fire.
Strict northern dwellings,
Covered by night as if with a roof.
On you, remote settlements,
It is written: You shall overcome.
I love you, distant havens,
In the province or in the village.
The darker and more worn the book,
The more soulful its beauty.
Moving heavy caravans,
Spreading the alphabet of fields,
Russia, like a magical book,
Is opened as if in the middle.
And suddenly it is written anew
By the nearest blizzard,
Covered with the strokes of a sleigh runner,
And white, like handmade lace.
October, silvery and nutty,
The tin-like gleam of frost,
Chekhovs autumn twilight,
Tchaikovskys and Levitans.

The subtexts in this painting can be interpreted in several ways. The prevalent autumn scenery, especially the dying leaves, often symbolizes decay, the passage of time, and the inevitability of change. This can evoke feelings of nostalgia or reflection on lifes ephemeral nature. The subdued color palette, dominated by greys, muted greens, and earthy browns, further contributes to a somber and introspective atmosphere, hinting at a sense of melancholy or a quiet resignation to the cycle of seasons. However, the bright pops of orange and yellow in the foliage can also be seen as a celebration of the last vibrant moments before winters dormancy, representing a final burst of life and beauty in the face of impending stillness. The vast, open valley and the distant, imposing forest can evoke a sense of human smallness against the grandeur of nature, prompting contemplation on ones place in the universe.
