SUMMER
As if Im forgetting how to do something.
In a state of oppression,
I recall the summer shimmer –
How much I loved summer as a child.
How vast the sea used to be!
It was cozy living in Anapa.
Nourishing, like milk,
The dense summer quenched my thirst.
Every morning on the seashore,
Crabs and crabs in frothy swirls...
I was sure I could escape,
And we did escape... Oh, how I wish I still could!
The waters edge is slightly golden,
Reflecting a green hue.
Is it a school of fish swimming by?
Or perhaps just a misty shade from the depths...
And later, near Kaluga, I lived
At my aunt and uncles dacha... Summer
Became dense, it was wonderful then.
I loved those twilight hours.
The world of that dacha was given to me
In a verdant and lush palette –
Here are the beds, quite juicy and full of life.
We picked strawberries with my mother.
But now summer is boredom, dust,
Going to work... That is,
I have grown older, and so it is
With me, but still the story
Of fate continues, even though I dont like its style.
How well the lower gasket works! Virtuoso performance!

Along the horizon line, a dense band of trees rises, their forms loosely defined and layered one upon another. Individual tree shapes are discernible but lack sharp outlines, blending into a cohesive mass that obscures any distant view. Patches of lighter green and yellow punctuate the darker foliage, possibly indicating sunlight filtering through the leaves or highlighting specific areas.
The sky is rendered as a pale, almost washed-out blue-green, contributing to the painting’s overall tranquility but also hinting at an overcast day. The brushwork here is less assertive than on the waters surface, creating a sense of distance and atmospheric haze.
A key element in understanding this work lies in its treatment of light and color. There is no strong directional lighting; instead, illumination appears diffused and even, softening edges and minimizing contrast. This creates an impression of stillness and quietude, evoking a contemplative mood. The limited range of colors reinforces the sense of unity and harmony within the scene.
Subtly, theres a feeling of melancholy or introspection conveyed through the subdued tones and lack of sharp detail. It’s not a celebratory depiction of nature; rather, it seems to capture a moment of quiet observation, perhaps tinged with a certain wistfulness. The blurred boundaries between water and reflection further suggest a dissolving of distinctions, hinting at themes of impermanence or the subjective nature of perception.
