Description of Arkhip Kuindzhi’s painting "A Moonlit Night on the Dnieper
The painting was painted by A.I. Quindzhi and was exhibited as the only painting in the 1880 exhibition. The painting was the only one at the exhibition and was a real sensation. The artist himself said that it was the main work of his life.
Quindzhi focused all his talent on conveying the illusion of real light, and searching for a composition that would convey a sense of space and light. "A Moonlit Night on the Dnieper" was the most convincing work that conveyed the effect of light so real. The moonlight and the glow of the light from the moon itself, the artist conveyed so accurately that the viewers who saw the painting were amazed.
Harmony and tranquility, the simplicity of the images in the picture. The artist for the work chose the top point from above. From here he has the opportunity to display on the canvas to a greater extent the sky. Here the moon is shining. It colors the clouds in a cold light. Below you can see the moonlight wavering on the waters of the Dnieper. You can see the slow course of the river, its curves and the line of the shore.
Kuindzhi was called the artist of light. He received this title for his love for the accurate portrayal of sunsets, midday shadows and moonlit nights.
The water surface of the Dnieper, the velvet night blue, is illuminated by moonlight. Thanks to this illumination, the Ukrainian huts are white. Despite the darkness, you can distinguish numerous objects in the picture. These are the huts, and trees covered with foliage, and the crooked stems of tartar. All of this is covered by the darkness of night, but is visible in brown.
The celestial sphere is depicted by the artist as majestic and endless.
Creating the picture, Kuindzhi applied one artistic device. Warm reddish hue of the earth he compared to the cold-silver shades. This allows the artist to achieve the effect of depth of space. The sense of vibrating light was obtained through the use of small dark brushstrokes in the highlights.
The picture is in the State Tretyakov Gallery.
