As an artist, hes talented, but as a person... hes quite the scoundrel! Only he could create such a caricatured depiction of a religious procession.
A magnificent illustration of how religion is the opiate of the masses.
A great artist living in their own country, deeply understanding life and realistically reflecting it. Generations have strived to escape this darkness.
A depressing scene. And all the more so against the backdrop of a felled forest. The Peredvizhniki (Itinerants) were not looking for light subjects. And Repin never managed to explain to Leo Tolstoy why he had painted this picture.
The desire to depict the realities of life in a painting clearly shows the influence of Vasily Grigoryevich Perovs work. However, his painting Peasant Easter Procession was characterized by a strong sense of irony.

The painting depicts a grand religious procession moving along a dusty road. A vast crowd of people, varying in social status and age, participates in the procession. Dominating the scene are banners and icons carried aloft, and in the foreground, a richly decorated shrine is being carried by several men. A clergyman in ornate robes walks among the faithful, and officials on horseback observe the event. The landscape is dry and hilly, with sparse vegetation, and the sky is a pale blue with a few clouds, suggesting a hot, possibly summer day.
