The painting, titled Duel, depicts a dramatic and somber scene set in a snowy landscape. In the foreground, a man lies on the ground, seemingly having fallen or collapsed in the snow. Two other men are present, one leaning over the fallen man with a gesture of concern or perhaps examination, and another standing further back and to the left, looking towards the fallen figure.
To the right, and standing apart from the others, is a solitary figure in a dark, formal outfit and top hat. This figure appears to be one of the duelists, perhaps the victor or the one who initiated the confrontation. The stillness of this figure contrasts with the apparent distress or aftermath surrounding the fallen man.
The setting is a rustic, possibly rural environment, with a snow-covered wooden structure in the background and bare trees silhouetted against a pale sky. The overall atmosphere is cold, stark, and tinged with tragedy.
