This painting, titled Rye, depicts a vast, golden field of rye under a dramatic sky. The foreground is dominated by the ripe rye, some of which has been cut and gathered into sheaves, with a winding dirt path, reflecting pools of water, cutting through it. The path leads the viewers eye into the middle ground where the rye field continues, meeting a slightly darker, more distant treeline that borders a thinly populated horizon. In the distance, small clusters of buildings and a white steeple suggest a village or small town.
The sky is a study in contrasts: on the right, dark, ominous storm clouds are gathering, while on the left, patches of bright blue sky and fluffy white cumulus clouds hint at brighter weather. The interplay of light and shadow across the landscape emphasizes this contrast, with areas of the rye field bathed in sunlight and others cast in shade.
