The painting After a Rain (1880) by Isaac Levitan depicts a rural landscape shortly after a downpour. The sky is a dramatic canvas of white and grey clouds, with hints of blue peeking through, suggesting the storm has passed or is moving away. Several birds are silhouetted against the vast expanse of the sky.
In the middle ground, a muddy, wet path winds through a green field. Figures, likely peasants, are visible on the path, some walking and others seeming to guide a horse-drawn cart laden with a large, dark haystack. The reflections of the sky and figures in the puddles on the path add a sense of atmosphere and realism. The landscape is dotted with more haystacks in the distance. A dark band of trees marks the horizon to the left, and the overall impression is one of a vast, open, and slightly somber countryside.
