Captivated by her gentle face and childlike, naive gaze, Serov chose his cousin as the image for this painting. Mashenka Simonovich proved to be his muse and stimulus to creativity. This girl has become for the author something truly native and close, so, after the painting "The Girl with Peaches," in 1888, "The Girl, lit by the sun" slightly changed the style of writing. The only thing that remained was that the painting depicts young people and the fact that the artist did not abandon the portrait. The author decided to paint a new portrait against the lush nature of the homestead in Domotkanovo.
Description of Valentin Serov’s painting "Girl Lit by the Sun"
Captivated by her gentle face and childlike, naive gaze, Serov chose his cousin as the image for this painting. Mashenka Simonovich proved to be his muse and stimulus to creativity.
This girl has become for the author something truly native and close, so, after the painting "The Girl with Peaches," in 1888, "The Girl, lit by the sun" slightly changed the style of writing. The only thing that remained was that the painting depicts young people and the fact that the artist did not abandon the portrait.
The author decided to paint a new portrait against the lush nature of the homestead in Domotkanovo. The portrait is full of life and effulgence. The color scheme and the saturation of shades emphasize the summer motif. Everything around is green and full of fragrances, the sun endlessly plays with its rays, warming up the earth. Somewhere in the distance, tired of the scorching sun, a girl crouches to rest in the shade of trees.
Even hiding under the trees, she could not completely escape the sun’s set, so she leaned against a tree and tried to cover herself completely. The girl’s features speak of her origins and the place where she grew up. Beautiful Russian features, a bright blush on her cheeks, slightly pensive, but truly joyful and peaceful.
This work did not leave anyone indifferent, many enthusiastic responses were left in her memory. But there were also those who called the work impressionistic. However, the author himself tirelessly argued that there were no shades of impressionism in it, he simply conveyed his deep feelings of admiration and tenderness for the real Russian beauty. It was also one of his favorites.
Not hiding his love for subtle and earthly feelings, the author did not hesitate to paint his sister, conveying her childlike features and adult gaze, sensual body and, immersed in thoughts, head. In the picture the girl seems to be playing with the sun, and it with her.

Очень красивая) свежая)
суперская*
да ну, не красиво
The most simplistic comments are like those of a three-year-old – just saying pretty or not pretty. This isnt about browsing glamorous magazines or flipping through a clothing catalog. Painting, ladies and gentlemen, is an independent form of existence; it reflects a world completely different from reality – the world of the human soul, of personality. And to even attempt to evaluate painting, you need to understand something about it.
Painting. Yes, hello.
The painting is filled with bright colors, the author is talented, theres nothing to say.
But couldnt they find a more beautiful model?
Or is M. Ya. Simonovich the only one who agreed to pose?
непонимаю!
Dear readers, what do you understand by beauty? Hideous girls with dyed hair in short skirts? If so, I can only feel sorry for you...
превосходно! такая свежая, яркая... дышит

Oh friend, I see youre good at using definitions from Wikipedia...
Ну а в картине понравился только лес, который изображён на заднем плане.
The painting is very beautiful and bright, and I think the woman in it is also very beautiful. It has a sense of simplicity and kindness, and the artist conveyed this through the portrait. Everyone sees something different, everyone has their own opinions and tastes, and each person perceives the inner world differently. And thats not even mentioning reality.
Очень красивая картина! И красивая девушка!
The girl is gentle, with a clear gaze, and she exudes lightness and freshness – what more could you want? Besides, forgive me for saying so, but Valentin Alexandrovich chose the model based on his own taste, not because there was no one else to pose. If you find her unattractive, perhaps the Russian Silver Age or specifically Serovs style is simply not for you.
All you hear is beauty, beauty! But in painting, the main thing isnt that, but rather conveying form, color, highlights, and contrasts. It doesnt matter if its beautiful or not; what matters is that its painted with lightness and tenderness! (Im studying at an art school for 5 years.)
For those who might be interested. Maybe someone has already mentioned this, but I havent read everything. Serov worked on this painting all summer, for 3 months. He created 17 versions. As far as I remember, he didnt like any of them in the end, so he would erase the paint and start over.
And you (didnt find a prettier girl, did you?). Sir, are you sure you have the right website?
It doesnt matter if the girl is beautiful or not; what matters is the authors perception of her. He saw beauty in this sunlit girl – a beauty that inspired him. If she doesnt appeal to you, dont argue about tastes, but try to find your own ideal and express it on canvas.
Глядя на эту картину, где-то в глубине душе возникают тёплые чувства.
Прошу прощения, господа!
Если не ошибаюсь это импрессионизм. Не так ли?
I admire her sweater – its like a painting and the texture of oak bark – such artistry! And she seems to be an educated young woman, knowledgeable in music and literature; she will make a good mother. She possesses purity, unlike some unpleasant people. And theres so much strength in her direct gaze.
Portrait of a Girl Bathed in Sunlight was painted by Valentin Serov. The portrait depicts Maria Yakovlevna Simonovich, Serovs cousin.
Serov worked on the portrait for three months. Maria Yakovlevna, herself an artist and sculptor, posed silently and patiently.
Recalling that time, Maria Yakovlevna writes: We worked tirelessly, both equally engrossed: he in creating a successful painting, and I in the importance of my role.
The sittings took place in the mornings and after lunch – for entire days. He studied and painted the face during the morning hours with the same lighting, and after lunch, when the light changed, he prepared sketches of the accessories: hands, clothing, and the landscape...
He was constantly painting, while I remained seated. Hours, days, weeks flew by, and already the third month of posing had begun... Yes, I posed for three months... and almost without interruption, except for those occasional morning or afternoon sessions that had to be postponed due to bad weather or some external obstacle.
The Portrait of a Girl Bathed in Sunlight, now displayed at the Tretyakov Gallery, solidifies the name of this new outstanding master, writes artist Ulyanov. Not only at exhibitions, but also within the gallery itself, it is difficult to find a work equal to it in its unique painting technique, and above all, in its extraordinary captivating freshness.
Serov considered this portrait one of his best works.

От подлинника этой картины идёт волшебство, благодать
You cannot comment Why?
The woman is wearing a white blouse with intricate lace detailing around the collar and cuffs, cinched at the waist with a brown belt. Her lower body is clad in a dark blue skirt. The sunlight illuminates her face and the upper part of her blouse, creating strong contrasts and highlighting the texture of her skin and clothing. Her hands are gently clasped in her lap, further contributing to the sense of quiet repose.
The background is a lush, green depiction of a forest or park. Sunlight filters through the leaves of the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground and the woman herself. The foliage is rendered with loose, impressionistic brushstrokes, conveying the vibrancy and movement of nature. The overall atmosphere is one of peacefulness and natural beauty, with the light playing a significant role in defining the mood and form.
The subtexts of this painting can be interpreted in several ways. The title itself, Girl illuminated by the sun, emphasizes the interplay of light and the subject, suggesting a moment of clarity or enlightenment, or perhaps simply capturing the fleeting beauty of a sunny day. The portrait style combined with the natural setting evokes a sense of youth, innocence, and a connection to nature. The womans calm and direct gaze can be seen as an invitation for the viewer to engage with her inner world. The title also identifies her by name, grounding the image in a specific personal and historical context, hinting at the artists relationship with his sitter. The impressionistic style, with its focus on light and color, conveys a subjective experience of reality, suggesting that the painting captures not just a likeness, but also a feeling or a moment in time.
