The image depicts the Dormition of the Virgin, a central event in Orthodox Christianity. The Virgin Mary lies on a large, ornate red bier, her eyes closed in a state of peaceful repose, dressed in dark robes. Around her, a congregation of mourners, including Apostles and other holy figures, express their grief and awe.
High above, at the center of the composition, Christ descends surrounded by a mandorla of divine light, supported by angels. He is depicted holding a small, swaddled infant, representing Marys soul. This celestial visitation is accompanied by two seraphim, fiery beings often associated with Gods presence. Two dark, winged figures, possibly representing the forces of evil or disbelief, are shown in the upper corners, seemingly repelled by the divine event.
The background features architectural elements suggesting a religious or sacred space - a grand building with arched windows and a tower-like structure on the left, and a more simplified building on the right. The overall scene is infused with solemnity and spiritual significance, emphasizing the transition of Mary from earthly life to heavenly glory.
