LaFe and his watercolor roses Automatic translate
The Bratec Lis Gallery in Moscow hosts an exhibition of the famous watercolor artist from Thailand - LaFe (Sattha Homsawat). We were given the opportunity to talk with the artist surrounded by his work. Details of the ongoing exhibition here .
You, the author of atmospheric landscapes and beautiful still lifes, brought to Moscow an exhibition dedicated to roses. What is the reason for this choice? What place do these beautiful flowers occupy in your life and work?
Rose is one of the most inspiring and perfect objects for me now. It combines amazing beauty, purity and harmony. Like many people, I see in it not just a flower, but a symbol of something very good. In my fate, she played a huge role. About a year ago, I presented my bride with a picture of a white rose. In this work, I tried to maximally express the whole depth of feelings for my beloved, enormous tenderness for her, admiration for her perfection. I am happy that the picture made a strong impression on her. Now we are together, and every rose I wrote is a declaration of love for the best woman on earth. From that moment, the image of the rose became dominant in my work, although for 20 years of painting I was attracted by a wide variety of objects and themes. My dream is that my paintings give everyone who sees them only positive emotions. This is the concept of my work.
By the way, watercolor paints are quite capricious and require the artist to master special skills. The realistic manner in which you work is not easy anyway, and with watercolors, apparently, is doubly complicated. What determines the choice of watercolor paints?
I gave preference to watercolors for a very long time, having tried many picturesque techniques and many types of paints before. These attempts did not bring me real satisfaction, did not inspire me as an artist. As soon as watercolors were in my hands, I immediately felt that this was exactly what I needed.
Watercolor is very different from other techniques and requires special mastery of the brush, because its apparent simplicity is deceiving. But no other paint or technique is capable of transmitting to the same degree the subtle nuances and variety of shades, freshness, proximity to nature. Watercolor allows you to achieve the necessary color intensity and at the same time transparency, softness, airiness. This is one of the most sensual and emotional painting techniques.
Question to you as an expert. In your opinion, how strong are the differences in painting technique in different parts of the world today? Is there anything special in the methods and tools you use, are there any national secrets? Or is it a technique widely used by artists around the world?
I think every creative person has his secrets. And this is not only a matter of professional skills or national differences, but also of the degree of emotional impact on the audience that a particular artist aspires to. Each has its own priorities. I have them too. I feel great joy from painting, I get a powerful emotional charge, I am enriched spiritually. It is very important for me to share these feelings with others, to open for them a world of beauty and harmony.
Is dedication to art the main childhood dream, or was there something else? And if you had not become an artist, what profession would you choose?
Surprisingly, as a child, I never thought about the career of an artist. Having matured and tried myself in different professions, I realized that not one of them is able to make me happy. That my real vocation is art and painting. I could not become an artist, I would still choose a profession related to painting. Maybe I would make a good architect.
Do constant travels around the world affect your creativity? How do you remember Russia?
Of course, travel greatly affects my work, enrich it. After all, they are changing the worldview, discovering the diversity of the world, its scale. On trips to different countries I meet with many people and see how similar they are with all the differences in mentality, traditions, perception of various phenomena in life.
It surprises and delights me. In such emotions, the inexhaustibility of my inspiration. I will have the best memories of Russia. I was struck by the diligence and hard work of students at my master classes. Their desire for excellence and comprehension of the secrets of complex watercolor techniques allowed them to achieve considerable progress even within the framework of one lesson. Warm relations have been established with many of the Russian students, which I plan to maintain in the future. Your kitchen made a big impression on me, especially soups.
I admire the architecture of Moscow, the beauty of its buildings, avenues and streets. I dream of returning here again, visiting different parts of your capital, taking plenty of pictures.
Muscovites and guests of the capital have a few more days to catch your paintings alive in the Brother Fox gallery. If not a secret, where do you go next?
In December, I will have a trip to India, where my exhibition will be held, a master class will be held for everyone. An exhibition is scheduled for February in China. Trips have already been planned for 2016, which will be no less saturated than the current one. If I am again invited to Russia, I will definitely come at any time.
I am very excited and happy about the opportunity to open my exhibition here in Russia, in Moscow. I have exhibited in different cities more than once, but I have never had such a wonderful exhibition. I am grateful and glad that so many people are interested in my work. The roses that you see are painted by me for my bride. But I wrote each of them in order to express love for everyone who sees them, for each of you.
