The war of 1812, presented in Nizhny Novgorod by painting of a distant era

Two centuries have passed since the events of 1812. Nizhny Novgorod provided its residents and guests of the city during the celebration of the bicentennial anniversary with the opportunity to see the work of artists who saw with their own eyes the events captured in their paintings, sketches, engravings.

A unique exhibition is still awaiting visitors at the Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum, which displays paintings reflecting the history of World War II in the 1812 exhibition. Previously, these canvases were stored in museum collections and were not available for public viewing. Among the authors of the works, masters of different generations are direct witnesses of events, and artists whose creations were written at a later time.

At the exhibition you can see a whole parade of portraits of famous people who were participants in the events of the time of the invasion of Napoleonic troops in Russia. Portraits are made by both Russian and French artists. Some exhibits show the work of their authors completely from an unexpected angle. Alexei Venetsianov, who is known for household painting, is represented at this exhibition by graphic work of the satirical genre.

Five halls of the museum were filled with exhibits telling about the history of a distant war, the living witnesses of which were sketches made at the battlefields. Among such works are sketches made in combat by the German artist Faber du Faure, who served in the army of Napoleon.

Visitors will be interested in a hall where you can see a whole collection of cartoons made by artists of the warring parties - Russia and France. These works are valuable not only by the relation of their authors to the events that take place, in them you can also see the everyday nuances of the past era. The exhibition will be available for viewing throughout September.
