The Hermitage celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812

On August 1, a festive event was held in the Hermitage dedicated to the first victory in the war of 1812, which took place from July 30 to August 1 (according to the new style) under Klyastitsy. The Russian army, previously defeated in front of Napoleon, first proved the strength of its weapons. The victory was a turning point in the minds of Russian soldiers, which largely determined the further course of history.

The celebration took place in the St. George Hall of the Winter Palace, in which the canvas of the artist Peter von Hess was placed. The painting “The Battle of Klyastitsy” reflects real hostilities, the chaos of war caused by the clashes of two great armies. Emotions from studying the canvas were reinforced by solemn combat marches performed by the Admiralty Orchestra. The final solemn element was the banners of the Russian regiments who participated in the battle. The guard of honor proudly introduced them to the Winter Palace, which marked the eternal principle - nothing should be forgotten!

The painting will be on display until December 25th. 200 years ago on this day, the French army was expelled from the borders of the Russian Empire. Besides hermitage Museum will open a number of exhibitions dedicated to this era and victory in World War II.
