"Mosaic art of Russia" in the exhibition hall of the "Union of Artists"

On November 14, Muscovites who came to the opening of the All-Russian exhibition of mosaic art were amazed at the splendor that presented them. A feature of the exhibition is the modern approach of artists to ancient technology that came to Russia from Byzantium.

Mosaic is an original arts and crafts requiring artists of high skill. Since any deficiency or misunderstanding of the characteristics of the material leads to the creation of clumsy and tasteless works. And vice versa, only perfect works performed masterfully have true aesthetic value.

Therefore, in our time there are very few masters working in this technique. And the more valuable each such specialist. At the opening, Alexander Kornoukhov, who is a mosaic master in the second generation, spoke about the history of this art form and the features of the profession. Using the example of his works, he demonstrated that correctly selected stones will complement each other and reveal beauty.

The original exhibits presented at the exhibition are sculptural compositions by Zurab Tsereteli and Ivan Lubennikov. Visitors to the old school who were expecting to see works reminiscent of the Soviet style, which bored everyone else 20-30 years ago, were amazed how much the approach had changed and the quality of the materials had improved.

Now, to create mosaics, the thinnest plates can be used, whose thickness does not exceed several millimeters. In addition, artists began to actively use wood and glass in their works. And they collect significant pieces from the smallest cubes, made in the Roman or Florentine style. The exhibition runs until November 28th.
