VILNIUS. The exhibition "Old Vilnius in the watercolors of Yuzapas Kamarkauskas" opened in the Vilnius art gallery.
At the artist’s works, the city appears before us as we can hardly see it elsewhere. As if creating illustrations for a book of fairy tales and legends about this ancient city, the artist shows us Vilnius destroyed by fires, battered in battles - an old but glorious city. These images return the viewer many centuries ago to events from the history of not only a specific city, but also the whole country as a whole.
Juozapas (Iozapas) Kamarauskas was born on April 29, 1874 near Ukmerge, into a large peasant family. He first studied at a local church school, and at the age of 10 he independently learned to draw. Later, he studied in Vilnius, at the Ivan Trutnev School of Painting, and at the age of 19 he entered the Central School of Technical Drawing of Baron Stieglitz in St. Petersburg at the Department of Architecture. Kamarauskas honed drawing skills at the imperial Academy of Arts. On the eve of World War I, the future artist was mobilized and served until 1917, served in the railway troops.
Kamarauskas met the 1917 revolution in St. Petersburg, where he lived and worked, occasionally making trips to his homeland. His career quickly went uphill. Until 1922, he worked in the Navy as an engineer and construction manager; the new government appointed him a provincial engineer and architect of St. Petersburg. Finally, the artist returned to Vilnius in 1923, for a long time he had no work, earning by random orders, restoration and copying paintings on a religious theme, drawing posters, genre paintings, construction projects. Kamarauskas contributed to the construction of the city, drew up city plans, marking up neighborhoods, etc.
Creativity Juozapas Kamarauskas left a big mark in the history of Lithuanian art. He left a rich heritage - more than four thousand paintings, some of which are stored in museums and private collections in the country. A special place in his work is Vilnius. Kamarauskas has done a great job, not only painting cityscapes, but also restoring historical monuments, drawing city plans, documenting old buildings and structures. His works have not only artistic value, but also documentary - with such tremendous accuracy and attention to detail, all the drawings and drawings have been completed. In the last years of his life, already at a very respectable age, Kamarauskas sketched the plans and views of the forty streets of the oldest part of the city, the most affected by the devastation during the Second World War. Each building was painted by him in scale, with photographic accuracy and marked on the plan. That is why his work is a separate line in the history of Vilnius - Juozapas Kamarauskas made great efforts to keep the old Vilnius in our memory and in the history of the country.
The best of his works are presented at the exhibition “Old Vilnius in the watercolors of Yuzapas Kamarkauskas”, which these days takes place in the city’s art gallery.
