During the terrorist attack in Oslo, paintings disappeared from the government building

During the attack, buildings damaged by artists, including Munch and Dolven, were damaged.

Krog’s painting “I Leden”, 1892, provided to the Ministry of Finance by the National Museum of Norway, which was damaged when several pieces of glass fell from a broken window.

In Oslo, the question was raised about the fate of a huge number of works of art that belonged to or were leased by the Norwegian government at the Nasjonalmuseet (National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design) and the Public Gallery in Norway (Koro), who suffered from the July 22 terrorist attack. During the bombing, buildings were damaged where the works of artists such as Edward Munch, Christian Krog and Anne Catherine Dolven were stored.

43 paintings by Nasjonalmuseet are missing, including works by Krogh, Dolven and Jacob Weidemann. Another 60 paintings were intact. The press service of the authority responsible for the building said it was “too early to give a report.”

Krog’s painting “I Leden”, 1892, was damaged when several pieces of glass from a broken window hit the canvas. “We can fix it, but it will take a long time,” says Kari Greve, head of the restoration committee of the National Museum.

The “Sne” of Lisa Nikolajsenen, 1969, turned out to be less damaged. Both canvases were provided to the Ministry of Finance, along with 24 paintings that were not affected. Among the survivors was "Winter on the Fjords" (Vinter ved Fjorden, 1915) Munch. The large relief work of Karl Nesyar based on Picasso’s sketches, which was in the halls of the Ministry of Education, remained intact, but the fate of the lesser work in the lobby, unfortunately, is unknown.

With the works provided by Koro, the situation is worse - the state of 76 of 93 paintings is unknown. At the same time, ten of them were in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter.

It’s still unsafe to enter some houses. The reason for this is the constant danger that the building will collapse or the ceiling will crumble.
