The long-standing correspondence of grandfather and grandmother discovered in the old folder is an eloquent proof of the devotion and love that resisted repression, separation and deprivation. The dramatic story of his own family inspired Lyudmila Evgenievna to create a saga about the life of several generations of the Osetskys family. Each of them has its own trials and a difficult situation of moral choice. Honest and thinking people in a totalitarian society are the main target for the government, which does not allow dissent. Its main enemies were intellectuals. That is why the camp life gave the main character Jacob Osetskiy communication with the hydrogeographer Richard Ivanovich Werner, who read on German Rilke, then with the expert on the Renaissance, art historian and art critic Nikolai Nikolayevich Punin or the Jewish poet Samuel Galkin. Jacob’s Ladder is a dedication to the worthy, smart, and unbroken.
