Mikhail Bulgakov, a man and a public garden. New address on the literary map of Moscow

MOSCOW. There will be more Bulgakov places in the capital. Square at Patriarch’s Ponds will receive the name of the writer

Back in 1924, the Patriarch’s Ponds lost their class alien name and became Pioneer ones, although this wonderful corner was least associated with frisky ladies in red ties. In 2015, the decision to assign a cozy recreation area named after Bulgakov hardly fits into the tendency to return the country to the past. It remains to be hoped that after a couple of years on the map of Moscow, suddenly, a square named after the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution will not appear in its place.

The toponymic initiative of the city authorities logically looped around the places associated with Mikhail Afanasevich. The square, over which the shadow of Woland invisibly hovers, and the mysterious house on Bolshaya Sadovaya, 10.

In the building with bay windows, commissioned by the tobacco king and philanthropist Ilya Pigit, in addition to the "bad apartment" in which the writer himself lived during the work on the "White Guard", and then his characters, there were a lot of interesting things. The number of talented people who lived here or visited this house is not countable. Konchalovsky, Pasternak, Yesenin (here he met Duncan), Chaliapin, Meyerhold, Tairov, Marshak and even Fanny Kaplan. Here in 2007, the Bulgakov Museum was opened. A trapezoidal house with windows, lanterns, wrought-iron gratings, stucco molding and marble does not cease to be a place of attraction for fans of the creator of “Master and Margarita” and those who want to get acquainted with a place unique to Russian culture and history. On September 26, the exhibition “House on Bolshaya Sadovaya” finished its work here, which made it possible to trace the history of the families that inhabited it. The visitors’ delight was caused by the interactive model of the house with the windows lit in it and memories coming to life in an amazing way.

In the meantime, gentlemen, everything is in the square!
