The American archive of Ilya Ilf is open to the public

The travel notes of Ilf and Petrov, which form the basis of the book "One-story America" - the result of a long trip overseas. The editorial board of the main party newspaper Pravda was waiting for revelations. Vivid examples were required, confirming the impasse of the development path chosen by the New World, caustic salt to the ulcers of decaying capitalism. But in the end, it turned out a book about a great country with all natural contradictions, from which much can be learned. Similar impressions were perceived at home with a sour mine. The book was censored, and since 1948 for 8 years, like everything written by Ilf and Petrov, it was banned. And since 1962, the Ilf family lost their rights to royalties.

The reference to “store happiness”, an unprecedented abundance of goods in the USSR, was little reminiscent of criticism. About clean and comfortable hotel rooms, standardly comfortable for any guest, and not just for especially important guests. About linen returned from washing perfectly washed and darned, about the presence of hot water at any season and time of day. I immediately recall the domestic torment of Pamela Travers during her voyage to the USSR, described in the book “Moscow Tour”. According to the memoirs of Alexandra Ilf, the surname taken from the credits of the Circus by Grigory Alexandrov is the rejection of home-grown Hollywood after meeting with the present.

In the presented archive are Ilf’s letters to his beloved wife and little daughter, separation from which greatly saddened him, as well as the deteriorating state of his health. The tuberculosis aggravated during the trip a year later caused his untimely death.

The curator of the exhibition dedicated to the memory of Alexandra Ilf is director Roman Liberov, one of whose films, Ilfipetrov, was dedicated to the legendary writing tandem. The only daughter of Ilya Arnoldovich carefully preserved and supplemented his father’s archive for many years: documents, letters, unique photographs. Soon after her death in 2013, her book of memoirs, “Home, Sweet Home,” was published on the shelves of bookstores.
