A summary of Bernard Werber’s "The Star Butterfly"
The novel tells the story of humanity’s exodus from a dying planet on a giant ark with a solar sail; the plot reimagines the biblical creation myth through a science fiction lens. Published in 2006 in France, it became one of the author’s most notable stand-alone novels, exploring themes of ecology, closed communities, and the cyclical nature of Earthly civilization.
Escape from the cradle
Engineer Yves Kramer hits world champion sailor Elizabeth Mallory with his car, leaving her unable to walk. Tormented by guilt, he tries to atone for his actions and discovers plans for a photon-powered starship in his late father’s archives. The idea is seized upon by billionaire Gabriel McNamara, dying of cancer, who is ready to invest his entire fortune in building a thirty-two-kilometer-long cylindrical ark, the "Star Butterfly," with a sail covering a million square kilometers. Yves’ assistant, Satine Vanderbilt, pulls the embittered Elizabeth out of her alcoholic stupor, convincing her to take over as the ship’s skipper, while biopsychologist Adrien Weiss undertakes to design a closed ecosystem within the vessel and select a crew of 144,000.
A base for the Last Hope project is secretly established in the desert. When the military and world governments declare the project illegal and attempt to storm the complex, the engineers fire up the engines ahead of schedule, incinerating the invading gendarmes on the launchpad.
Launch of the microworld
In geostationary orbit, the sections of a huge cylinder expand. The sail tangles as it deploys, and Elizabeth, in outer space, struggles to straighten the Mylar, nearly dying from suffocation. Yves falls after her and miraculously saves the navigator, while the kitten Domino helps bring her back to life. Inside the cylinder, Adrien initiates centrifugal rotation for gravity, deposits earth, and fills the riverbed leading to a lilac lake. The settlement of Paradise City emerges, led by Mayor Jocelyn Perez.
The ship accelerates to over two million kilometers per hour, heading for a barely discernible star system two light-years away. Yves hides a map of their final destination in the hollow shaft of the wooden steering wheel behind a coded riddle, hoping that only distant descendants who have improved upon their ancestors will discover the coordinates. A love affair blossoms between Yves and the now-recovered Elizabeth, and they give birth to their first star daughter, Elodie.
The first cracks
Harmony doesn’t last long. The accidental murder of a woman by a jealous baker shatters the illusion of a bloodless society: the inhabitants are forced to build their first prison and institute a jury system. Then, longing for the abandoned planet provokes an armed rebellion, led by Satine Vanderbilt, who has returned under an assumed name. McNamara is mortally wounded in the skirmish, and a hundred rebels steal the only landing module, the Midge, back toward the sun, leaving the colonists without a shuttle for a future landing.
Yves begins construction on the two-seater "Moshka-2" while Elizabeth gives birth to twins and dies of internal bleeding. Yves buries his beloved, plants an apple tree on her hill, hides the logbooks containing the encyclopedia in a hollow tree, and soon dies of grief and old age, bequeathing the knowledge to his descendants.
The collapse of generations
Century after century, the cylinder’s population reproduces historical mistakes. Internal strife flares up with renewed ferocity: Paradise City wars with the rebellious Hell City, squads of archers on bamboo bicycles give way to catapults, religious massacres, and the totalitarian rule of tyrants. Shells shatter the neon lamps of the inner sun, plunging the compartments into semi-darkness. The ark’s sails are torn by the impacts of stray meteorites. After 1,251 years of flight, only six feral teenagers remain of the 144,000 colonists, hunting glowing, mutated rabbits among the overgrown ruins.
Hexadecimal Elizabeth-15 and young Adrien-18 decipher the letter code on the control wheel and retrieve a map of the target planet. Having found a key to a secret hangar containing the "Moshka-2" and containers of frozen embryos of Earth species in an old apple tree, Elizabeth-15 chooses Adrien as her companion, leaving the other four boys to live out their lives on the decrepit starship.
New firmament
A descent through thick clouds results in the sails burning and the shuttle crashing onto a vast gray island in the middle of the ocean. Choking in the acrid, pristine air, the young man and woman tear off their spacesuit helmets and realize they can breathe on the new planet. Dinosaurs inhabit the area, but terrestrial bacteria brought by the survivors instantly causes a deadly plague among the giant lizards.
Having settled in a hut in the branches of a giant tree, the colonists thaw the embryos, releasing ants, rabbits, butterflies, wolves, and livestock. Two years later, the couple quarrels over dominance in bed; Elizabeth retreats to a cave, where she dies from the bite of a mutated venomous snake while pregnant.
Driven mad by loneliness, Adrien retrieves the last vial labeled "Homo Sapiens" from cryostorage. Unable to initiate cell division normally, he cuts open his side, breaks a rib, and uses his own bone marrow to clone a human embryo. He names the baby girl, grown in an incubator, Eia, a combination of the initials of Elizabeth, Eva, and his own name.
Nineteen years later, a grown-up, hearing-impaired girl sits by a campfire on a mountaintop and asks for a story about her ancestors. Adrien recounts the flight of the "Star Butterfly," and the girl carefully jots down the distorted names in a notebook: the Creator Yahweh, the traitor Satan, the first rebellious Lilith, and the ancestor Adam, who created her, Eve, from his broken rib. Watching the night butterfly fly away toward the light, the man realizes that his flight through the stars has merely closed an endless circle that will one day repeat itself.
