Vadim Panov’s "Moscow Club," a summary
Written in 2005, the novel is a dystopian cyberpunk novel with elements of a thrilling political detective story, depicting a world where globalization has triumphed. In this future, state institutions have lost their former influence, and key resources and territories have fallen under the control of transnational corporations that have created independent extraterritorial zones. The intrigues unfolding around innovative scientific developments reveal the mechanisms of secret rivalry between corporate enclaves and state intelligence agencies.
This work is the first installment in the "Enclaves" series. This fantasy series also includes the following novels: "Guides at the Crossroads," "Bonfires on the Altars," "Sellers of the Impossible," and "Chaos Perfection."
World order and the preparation of global intrigue
The action takes place in the mid-twenty-first century. The planet is divided between government structures and corporate enclaves, each governed by its own laws. The core values of the new order are technology, direct connection to the information network via a personal chip in the head — the "balalaika," as well as strictly guarded scientific secrets.
In Singapore, Chinese military intelligence officer Colonel Tao and old man Liao recruit a legendary hacker nicknamed "Chaika." Chinese intelligence is seeking to acquire classified materials from the MosTech Corporation’s energy laboratory. Rumors circulate online that Moscow engineers are on the verge of a major breakthrough in energy production. Chaika is tasked with infiltrating the Moscow Enclave’s internal network. The previous hacker, Harlequin, who hacked the Voronezh test site, was shot dead in St. Petersburg.
Meanwhile, in Moscow, the head of the local Enclave Security Service, Maximilian Kaufman, known by the nickname "The Dead," is carrying out a complex, multi-step plan. Operative Grégoire Slonovsky, along with Marat, extract Laura Belmakh from the gangster firm of the Bobry brothers in the Swamp. The pretext of a wanted climber’s wife turns out to be a cover: the Bezy are targeting a courier from Rio who was transporting seven unaccounted high-power processors — "floats."
In Shanghai, a mysterious mercenary in a nanomask kills the prominent engraver Xie Xianji and his servant Hua, destroying an underground electrolab. At the Pyramidome headquarters, Mertvy and investigator Mishenka Shcheglov interrogate the kidnapped Chinese intelligence major Shenghong and the crippled Harlequin, who was actually captured alive. Kaufman uncovers details of the impending Chinese attack. In the City, Naukom executives Igor Kholodov and Gennady Starovich, along with Kaufman, form a shadowy alliance called the Moscow Club. They discover that Roman Fadeev, owner of the Fadeev Group, is conducting a large-scale stock market game, buying up MosTech shares with funds from a Hong Kong bank.
The Kidnapping of an Heiress and a Stock Exchange Trap
Roman Fadeev’s eighteen-year-old granddaughter, Petra Kroncl, is vacationing at the Yabloko orbital station. She decides to descend to Earth on a shuttle with her instructor, Jim. Rita Sever, a breaker hired by the Bioresources Association, seizes control of the shuttle directly from Moscow, blocking communications with the station and the Sheremetyevo transport hub. The onboard computer ejects the escape capsule over the Moscow region.
At the crash site, the capsule is met by clerk Zviad Zuzinidze, who leads a gang in Urus. He kills instructor Jim and takes Petra. The Association plans to demand a ransom of two billion yuan from Roman Fadeev. Zuzinidze fails to intercept the capsule at the airport due to a simulated network attack.
A worried Roman Fadeyev frantically searches for a way to save his granddaughter. He turns to Edinburgh Security Director Sean Macpherson, Colonel Tao, and a smuggler nicknamed "The Horseman." The Horseman is actually Kirill Gryaznov, an antique dealer from the Swamp.
At the same time, a young man named Ilya Dementyev, purportedly a student of the repressed mathematician Mark Tanaevsky, arrives in Moscow disguised as a fugitive from St. Petersburg. He infiltrates the Enclave under the belly of a high-speed express train with the burglar Maya Perepletchitsa. In reality, Ilya is Chaika, disguised by the underground surgeon Farid. The burglar hopes to use a Chinese contract to outwit Chinese intelligence and gain true freedom.
The fight to save Petra and the storming of Urus
The Horseman meets with the Broker, the Association’s regional manager, offering four billion yuan for Petra’s release. The Broker refuses, fearing sanctions from the Association’s leadership. The Broker is soon found dead in his SUV, his throat severed.
The Bobry brothers (Timokha, Mitrokha, Petrukha, and Nikolai Nikolaevich) realize that Zviad Zuzinidze is hiding the girl. Wanting to eliminate their competitor and write off their debts to the Consortium, they infiltrate Zviad’s base through abandoned subway lines.
At the same moment, the Dead One orders a full-scale assault on the Zuzinidze base, using armored vehicles, Bee helicopters, and paratroopers in "Locust" uniforms. At the same time, Chinese special forces under the command of Gui Wei enter the battle. Chaos erupts in the base’s basement.
Zviad attempts to smuggle Petra out in an armored jeep. As he leaves, the vehicle is fired upon by members of the Joint Investigation Committee, led by Captain Emira Go, hired by Fadeyev. The heavy jeep enters a destroyed workshop. The wounded Zviad threatens the girl, but Petra displays her grandfatherly nature and plunges a dagger into her captor’s neck.
Petra, who escaped from a wrecked car, is picked up by a small-time trader named Gryzha and brought to veterinarian Cornelius Yezhov. Cornelius turns out to be a member of the religious Mutabor corporation and a friend of the Horseman. He hides Petra at his Animal Farm, while Shira’s combat hide-and-seek eliminates Gryzha. Yezhov reports everything to Gryaznov.
The network attack’s denouement and the true nature of the plasma project
Chaika and Maya Perepletchitsa launch a hack from the basement of a chemical plant in Kolyma, using a fake two-stage attack in the City as a distraction. The hacker breaches the Enclave Security Service’s defenses and gains access to the server.
However, MosTech’s internal database contains no mention of a new energy source. Chaika realizes the classified materials have been removed from the digital network. The thief pushes the Chinese out of control, stages an accident at the chemical plant, and fakes his own death along with Maya’s.
Chaika safely escapes through secret tunnels. He finally transforms into student Ilya Dementyev, who scored a perfect 100 on his Moscow University entrance exams, and begins a clean life.
Colonel Tao receives a compressed data set and realizes the grand operation has failed. The rumors of a scientific breakthrough were disinformation. The Moscow Club deliberately engineered the leak to force Fadeev and Chinese funds to buy up MosTech shares, while the Moscow Club itself bought a controlling stake in Fadeev Group at a low price.
The end of the story and the fates of key figures
Roman Fadeev flies to Moscow and meets with Kaufman at the Pyramidome. The dead man reveals the whole truth to Iron Rom. The PP8713 plasma converter does exist, but its plans were never stored on the internal network. Twenty-four years of research exhausted MosTech’s resources, but the project was crowned with success.
Kaufman explains that the Moscow Club concealed the discovery to prevent a new global war over resources. The use of plasma energy will eliminate oil dependence, but will trigger a massive rearmament of the militaries of leading powers.
Realizing he’s lost control of his empire, Roman Fadeyev takes poison right in the Dead Man’s office. Before his death, he leaves a new will. All his assets are transferred to the management of the Guardianship Council, headed by Igor Kholodov, until Petra comes of age.
Petra Kroncl is officially declared dead in a plane crash over the English Channel. In reality, Kirill Gryaznov obtains new documents for the girl. Petra becomes his adopted daughter and enrolls at Moscow University. Captain Emir Guo receives twenty million yuan for her secret protection.
Kaufman’s deputy, Eddie Chincha, attempts to blackmail his boss with stolen incriminating files. Kaufman eliminates the traitor during a sting operation in the Chinese baths on Shabolovka.
At a testing ground in Chelyabinsk, Naukom engineers are successfully testing a plasma converter on a helicopter. The aircraft logs thirty hours of continuous flight. The era of oil dependence is finally becoming a thing of the past.
