It offers readers a completely new take on the familiar story of the Twelve Months, where ancient magic is closely intertwined with unpredictable human destinies. The author skillfully blends Slavic motifs with the classic heroic journey.
The Life of a Rejected Princess
For hundreds of years, the principalities have not experienced a true winter. People sincerely believe that the autumn months reliably protect them from the harsh cold. Children born in winter are traditionally taken to the Cursed Forest and abandoned there for the safety of all other inhabitants. Prince Darius was forced to abandon his newborn daughter, Yara, in the cold snow. In the morning, her shocked father found the girl completely alive in the same spot. Yara grew up with dark hair, the only person with such a rare appearance in the Principality of Renska. Her older sisters, Vasilisa and Mira, constantly mock her, and other superstitious people openly shun the "December witch."
Faithful friend
Yara’s only true escape is her strong friendship with Ilya. The young man comes from a very noble family. Due to a serious quarrel with his strict father, he works as a simple groom at the castle. Ilya is completely unafraid of the princess’s black hair and her supposed winter curse. He secretly teaches Yara archery in the most remote corner of the vast courtyard. The girl happily spends all her free time with him. With Ilya, she feels completely ordinary, not a despised outcast. They often laugh together, discuss old tales, and sincerely dream of a peaceful life far from the strictures of the palace.
A difficult decision
A cold November dawns, and Yara’s eighteenth birthday is rapidly approaching. She accidentally learns terrifying news. Prince Darius is terminally ill; the best doctors predict he has less than a year to live. For a long time, the ruler skillfully concealed his grave illness from his beloved daughters. Darius hastily invites the young princes Vladimir and Isai from the neighboring rich lands to his castle. He desperately wants to quickly marry Mira and Vasilisa off to ensure their future. Yara cannot bear the terrible thought of the imminent loss of her loving father. Old tales say that deep in the Cursed Forest, a miraculous living water can be found that cures absolutely any illness. The girl makes a firm decision to risk her own life to save her father.
Journey to the Cursed Forest
Yara secretly gathers the bare essentials, takes her bow and arrows, and quietly leaves her home. Completely alone, the girl sets off straight for the borders of the principality, where the forbidden land of eternal cold begins. Crossing the invisible line of the Cursed Forest, she immediately physically feels the icy breath of winter. Deep, untouched snowdrifts lie all around, and the mighty trees are thickly coated with glittering frost. Yara is suddenly attacked by a pack of hungry wild foxes, but miraculously manages to fight them off. Soon, she finds a lonely, sturdy wooden hut. Inside, lives a stern, middle-aged man with a cold gaze. Yara mistakes him for the December Sorcerer himself. The master of the forest does not turn his frozen and stubborn guest out into the street. Yara begins living in the hut permanently. She cooks delicious meals, cleans the spacious rooms, and actively helps the sorcerer care for the freezing forest.
Secrets of past centuries
During the long, quiet winter evenings, the sorcerer frankly tells Yara the true history of the world. People are deeply mistaken in habitually regarding winter as an absolute and invincible evil. In the distant past, all Twelve Months lived in complete harmony and peace. September fell sincerely in love with an ordinary mortal girl, but the human lifespan proved too short. When she suddenly died, September plunged into a bottomless and devastating grief. The envious November wanted to completely repeat his brother’s path and find himself a beautiful mortal wife. To achieve his selfish goal, November resorted to the greatest despicable act. He cruelly divided the souls of his winter brothers — December, January, and February. The treacherous month forever imprisoned their essences in a deep lake, reliably covered with a thick layer of ice. Only the true and destined bride can melt this enchanted ice.
An unexpected meeting
The sorcerer honestly admits that he is using his last strength to protect the last vestiges of snow on a small patch of land. If he completely loses his strength, winter will disappear forever, and all nature will cease to renew itself. Suddenly, a tired Ilya appears in the Cursed Forest. He had been searching for Yara for a long time, following the footprints left in the snow. The girl is overjoyed to meet her most trusted friend. It turns out that many years ago, a complete stranger gave Yara an unusual ring. This ring reliably and constantly hid her from November’s piercing gaze. The boy turned out to be the agile March himself. Yara firmly agrees to help the sorcerer in the unequal struggle for the long-awaited return of winter. Soon, the heroes come face to face with the castle’s high-ranking guests — Vladimir and Isai. It turns out that these are not mortal princes at all. October and November are skillfully disguised behind their human guises. Isai asserts his indisputable rights to Yara, openly calling her his legal bride.
Battle of the Brothers
Ilya boldly stands in the way of the powerful and furious autumn months. The young man desperately battles Vladimir and Isai, pushing them to the very limits of human endurance. The sorcerer immediately and furiously joins the fray. In the heat of a brutal and bloody battle, a great secret is revealed. Ilya is the long-lost February. Many years ago, Mart accidentally found a mortally wounded boy, Ilya, in the forest. To save a tiny fragment of February’s soul, Mart carefully placed it within the dying child’s body. Thus, February grew up among ordinary people, completely unaware of his true and immortal origins. The Autumn Brothers inflict a grievous wound on Ilya. The young man falls heavily onto the bloody snow. With the last of his fading strength, he accurately throws January’s heavy axe to Yara.
Liberation of Winter
Ilya begs Yara to immediately free her languishing brothers. The girl runs swiftly toward the frozen, smooth lake. She slashes her axe repeatedly against the thick ice with all her might. The surface quickly cracks with an incredibly deafening ringing sound. The souls of December and January are swiftly released from their long, multi-year captivity. A powerful, cold magical wave instantly sweeps across the entire forest. The autumn months are forced to cowardly retreat before winter, which has regained its rightful strength. March performs a very complex, ancient ritual, returning February’s soul to his true, immortal body. The process causes February unbearable physical pain, as Ilya’s weak human body has accumulated a vast amount of unpredictable, intense emotions. Having overcome the intense shock, February tenderly kisses the tearful Yara and disappears without a trace into the thick snowstorm along with the rest of his winter brothers.
Returning home
Yara safely returns to her native Rensk with a vial of precious living water. Prince Darius drinks the miraculous medicine and recovers surprisingly quickly. The girl recounts to her father in great detail all the hidden circumstances of her perilous journey. The days drag on unbearably slowly and tediously. Yara often comes to the snowy edge of the forest and loudly calls for February, but no one answers. The real princes Vladimir and Isaiah unexpectedly arrive at the palace. The older sisters, Vasilisa and Mira, joyfully marry them and leave their father’s castle forever. Life in the vast principality gradually and surely returns to its usual peaceful course.
The long-awaited wedding
All twelve months suddenly arrive at the sisters’ solemn and riotous wedding feast, dressed in beautiful ceremonial attire. February confidently and proudly approaches Prince Darius and formally asks for the hand of his beloved youngest daughter. Darius, with great, sincere joy, blesses the happy lovers. Yara and February celebrate a magnificent and memorable wedding. People forever and irrevocably forget the offensive nickname "December witch." The cold snowstorms obediently and quickly subside when Yara steps outside. She safely gives birth to two healthy children during the coldest winter months. Nature fully recovers after a long period of stagnation, and the vast lands of the principality once again yield an unprecedentedly rich harvest.
