Two Russian films entered the program of the Cannes Film Festival

This year’s Cannes International Film Festival will be held from May 13 to 24. In the main competition, as well as in the “Special Look” program, not a single Russian picture has passed this year. But two short stories of Russian cinematographers - “The Return of Erkin” (directed by Maria Guskova, VKSR film studio) and “14 Steps” (directed by Maxim Shavkin, Moscow School of New Cinema), were selected to participate in the competition of the “Cinefondation” section.

The program “Cinefondation” includes short films created by students in the process of training in film schools. In connection with the 18th anniversary of this program, breeders decided to select 18 paintings that will represent 18 schools from 16 countries. This section traditionally presents 3 awards. The names of the winners will be announced on May 22.

It is worth noting that the director Alexander Sokurov for some reason decided not to take part in the main competitive program of the Cannes Film Festival with his documentary-production film “Francophonie. The Louvre under German occupation. " “The producers advised me to send Francophonie to the competition, but I categorically refused. My paintings have already participated in the festival several times and even received prizes, but my time has passed and it’s time to give way to the young. I don’t have any feelings about the competition events, so let those who have festival prizes mean something participate in them, ”he said.

Recall that the film “Francophonie. The Louvre under the German occupation ”is a joint product of three countries - France, the Netherlands and Germany. A year ago, at the presentation of the picture, Alexander Sokurov announced that he wanted to send his film to the French film festival, preferring Cannes to Berlin.
