MOSCOW. Roman Liberov’s documentary-animated film about Mandelstam was released

A month earlier, on September 25, a monument to Osip Mandelstam and his wife Nadezhda appeared on the Nadezjda Mandelstamstraat in Amsterdam next to Pasternak Street and Bunin Avenue. Its author, sculptor Hanneke de Münck, believes that the expediency of his appearance in the freedom-loving Dutch capital is obvious, since the poet’s personality has become an example of outstanding free-thinking for many. But the choice of Mandelstam as the next hero of a series of "writer" films is due not only to this. The beautiful Russian language, the metaphor and depth of his soul-raising poetry, capable, according to Liberov, of becoming a panacea for evil deeds. The philologist S. B. Rudakov, who during the period of the Voronezh exile met Osip Emilievich, compared him in one of his letters to his wife with the working mechanism of poetry, Michelangelo, a genius helpless in everyday life.

A film about Mandelstam, the relevance of whose poems in modern realities is becoming more apparent every day, was inevitable, as were the pictures about Olesha, Ilf and Petrov, Dovlatov, Brodsky. The admiration of immensely talented people was transformed in the scenario of Liberov about the era and the fate of those who were destroyed, crippled morally, squeezed out of the country. The feeling of impending disaster, the piercing of the verses sounded behind the scenes enhances the video sequence combining documentary shots, game moments, animation. The appearance of Mandelstam in the image of a tragic puppet doll, the soundtrack of Kirill Pirogov, music by Noize MC, refrain-sounding verses inevitably bring catharsis closer. The presence of an unexpected in this story hip-hop artist seems appropriate in the desire to unleash the geniuses who appear in the films of Liberov alive, troubled, loving. “Save my speech forever” - a personal interpretation of the poet’s image, a story about his life, which included life in his native Warsaw, studies at the Sorbonne, wanderings, great poems, a suicidal epigram on Stalin, persecution, exile, typhus death in the camp and lost forever grave.
