The works of Wu, who lived from 1919 to 2010, relate to the period that covers most of the turbulent twentieth century of China and its growth as a world power in the twenty-first century, were widely shown in Europe, but not fully in the United States. In addition, employees of the Shanghai Art Museum, which collected most of Wu’s work, announced on Tuesday a significant expansion of the exhibition space of the Asian Society Museum in Manhattan in October. In fact, the history of Wu reflects much of the contemporary attitude to the art of China and the outside world.
Although in the end he became one of the most famous artists in China, giving a new life to traditional painting methods, Wu struggled for recognition in the West for a long time, while he seriously suffered from persecution in his country. “More than anything else, he wanted to be appreciated and recognized by his point of view in both China and the West,” said the artist’s son, Wu Keyu. The artist’s comments on the works, by the way, were translated into English by his grandson.
Wu said his father suffered exile and oblivion during the Cultural Revolution, but he had the good fortune to live “at a time when China began to open its doors, especially to the Western world.”
The exhibition of works by a Chinese artist, whose paintings now cost millions of dollars, will last until August 5, and will focus on the most striking works of Wu. “This exhibition is different from what you are used to seeing in America from artists from China,” said Melissa Tszyu, director of the Museum of Asia Society. “This is truly a breakthrough in this traditional environment.” Tszyu stated that Wu’s New York exhibition reflects a new relationship between Western and Chinese cultures. “For too long, American museums have been asking for what they want to see. But now we are in charge of the exhibition and we actually made our own choice, ”she said.
