The largest Hindu temple dating from the 13th century found in Bali

Construction workers in Bali discovered the largest, according to archaeologists, of all the famous ancient Hindu temple ever found on an Indonesian island.

The temple was found by accident, during work on laying sewers in the capital of the island of Denpasar, a famous center for the study of Hindu culture. The find was reported to archaeologists who, during further excavations, found the foundation of the temple, dating, according to preliminary estimates, 13-15 centuries.

“We believe this is the largest ancient Hindu temple ever discovered on the island of Bali,” said Wayan Suantika, head of the archaeological team. He said that excavations are still ongoing. At the moment, it is not clear whether the temple will be restored. and the team did not yet know if the stones would be excavated enough to allow them to rebuild the temple. The size of the stones that make up the foundation is one meter long, 40 cm wide and 40 cm deep. The size of the eastern wing of the temple in this case exceeds 20 meters in length. The island of Bali is a popular resort, famous for being the largest center for the study of Hindu culture, despite the fact that the main population of the island professes Islam.
