Italian cleaning lady throws a piece of modern art into the trash

BARI. A cleaning lady in southern Italy mistakenly threw into the trash works of modern art, which were to become part of the exhibition in the local gallery of modern art.

Lorenzo Roca, the head of the cleaning company, said that the woman “just did her job”, she thought that the two discarded works were just part of the garbage left in the gallery after preparing for the opening of the exhibition, which will be held next Wednesday, in Bari.

According to the organizers themselves, one of the works, “destroyed” by the cleaning lady, consisted of pieces of cookies that were scattered across the floor and thus expressed an artist’s intention. Mr. Roca noted with regret that now his cleaning company will have to pay insurance coverage for a damaged work of art, the value of which is estimated, no less, at 10,000 euros.

So, in 2001, the work of the artist Damien Hirst, consisting of an ashtray, dirty coffee cups, empty beer bottles and crumpled newspapers, was thrown out by the cleaners of the London art gallery. And in 1999, the young Briton Tracy Emin was one step away from receiving the Turner Prize for the conceptual installation of “My Bed”, when one of the museum patrons, seeing the exhibition, thought that the bed was the victim of an act of vandalism, and ordered the bed to be put in order.
