State Research Museum of Architecture named after A.V. Shchuseva presents a large-scale exhibition project “AVANGARDSTROY. The architectural rhythm of the Revolution ”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917.
The architectural avant-garde was born in one cauldron of raging artistic phenomena of the 1920s, together with Malevich’s Suprematism, Mayakovsky’s poems and Meyerhold’s innovative productions. Its development was facilitated by the original training system created by the teachers of VKhUTEMAS, the activities of innovative groups ASNOVA (Association of New Architects) and OCA (Association of Modern Architects). State policy, the cultural revolution and the collectivization of everyday life of citizens led to an unprecedented upsurge in construction throughout the country and the emergence of new types of structures - work clubs, housing complexes, communal houses and kitchen factories. The innovative ideas of Soviet architects were embodied not only in the real construction of the 1920-1930s, but also in utopian projects for the reconstruction of entire cities.
The bright era of the architectural avant-garde of the 1920-1930s will be presented in the works of prominent Soviet architects and artists such as the Vesnin brothers, Ivan Leonidov, Konstantin Melnikov, Nikolai Ladovsky, Moses Ginzburg, Ilya and Panteleimon Golosov, Vladimir Krinsky and many others. The author’s graphics will be supplemented by mock-ups, archival video materials, photographs, documents, as well as works of decorative and applied art from museums in Moscow, St. Petersburg and private collections. A large number of objects from the collections of the Museum of Architecture will be shown for the first time.
The materials of the exhibition will appear in the exposition developed by the architectural workshop of Totan Kuzembaev, whose interest in experiments with materials and form will be a worthy frame for the bold ideas of the “pioneers of Soviet architecture” of the 1920-1930s.
One of the goals of the project is to draw attention to the problem of preserving the monuments of the Soviet avant-garde - valuable objects of the architectural heritage not only of our country, but of the whole world.
As part of the exhibition project, an extensive educational program is planned - lectures, discussions and film screenings.
