On June 18 at 3:00 PM, the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (103 Lenin St.) will host the opening of the collection exhibition "Heroics of Everyday Life," dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Kaluga branch of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia.
This is a historical and artistic project that tells the story of an important event in Kaluga’s cultural life: the creation in 1926 of a branch of one of the first creative organizations in the USSR — the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia.
The establishment of the Kaluga branch of the Association was made possible by the support of the artist A. V. Grigoriev, one of the founders of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR), who led it from 1923 to 1927. V. N. Levandovsky, the museum’s director, was elected chairman of the branch, which was based at the art museum. Kaluga AKhRR artists planned to achieve the branch’s "task of bringing art closer to the masses and reflecting contemporary reality" by organizing exhibitions of their works (in the city, traveling to villages and factories), and by participating in the association’s general exhibitions in the capital.
The exhibition features 20 paintings and graphic works by members of the Kaluga branch of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR) and artists with similar ideological affinities. Although the AKhRR members primarily focused on depicting contemporary events in their work, the majority of the works by the Kaluga artists are landscapes. A characteristic feature of most of these works is their "humanization," the introduction of people into the canvas space, bringing to life the world created within the colorful field.
Just a few works at the exhibition represent the still life and portrait genres. Through the lifelike representation of objects, the viewer can not only immerse themselves in the atmosphere of that difficult time.
A separate section of the exhibition is devoted to genre paintings that succinctly reflect the life and everyday life of their era. The central theme of these works is the exploration of labor in its various manifestations.
The significance of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia as one of the first creative associations in the Soviet Union is difficult to overestimate; it became a landmark stage in the development of Russian art in the 20th century.
