In modern urban culture, lullabies sing in order to lull a baby. But for the traditional worldview, singing lullabies is also a ritual that affects reality. The lullaby genre is multifunctional, and traditionally their performance is aimed not only at the baby. One of the functions of lullabies is to calm the performer himself, asserting the child’s security in his mind.
At the lecture, we will talk about the functions of lullabies and the variety of their motives. We will discuss why mortal lullabies sang in villages, how “own” and “alien” spaces are labeled in lullabies, and what lullabies can tell us about the traditional worldview.
After the lecture, guests will listen to lullabies performed by the actors of the Theater of Nations, "Practice", Mayakovsky Theater, and the author’s theater "Sketches in Space".
