The School of Visual Arts, together with the New Museum and the Projector magazine, presents the Underground Images exhibition. Posters of the School of Fine Arts in the New York subway from 1947 to the present. " The exhibition takes pride of place in the program of the Fifth St. Petersburg Design Week. She presents over fifty of the countless posters created at SVA for distribution on the New York subway. The exhibition is a retrospective look at the history of the School, demonstrates the talent of its graduates in the field of design and illustration.
In the mid-1950s, SVA was one of the first US academic schools to recognize the need for new strategies to attract students. SVA placed on the New York subway platforms advertising posters of legendary designers of its time, such as Ivan Chermaev, Milton Glaser and George Czerny. All of them taught at the School, and in their works they spoke about what it means to be an artist, demonstrated an author’s visual statement. The New York Metro, which was previously dominated by commercial advertising, suddenly became a platform for the promotion of contemporary art and design. Posters in which aesthetics are not sacrificed for commerce, free of advertising stereotypes, made a splash, bringing a new level of graphics to the New York subway. Like the School itself, posters in the New York subway became inseparable from the city, prompting a creative search.
All 29 artists whose works are presented at the exhibition in the Underground Images project are former and current teachers of the School: Gail Anderson, Marshal Arisman, Jean Keyes, Ivan Chermaev, Paul Davis, Sol DeVito, Louise Fili, Audrey Flack, Nathan Fox, Bob Gill, Robert Justy, Milton Glaser (author of the famous “I Love NY ’logo), Phil Hayes, Stephen Heller, Mirko Ilic, Victor Cohen, Stephen Kreninger, Marvin Mattelson, Clay Patrick McBride, James McMullan, Jerry Moriarty, Tony Palladino, Stefan Sagmeister, David Sandlin, Paula Cher, Yves Sonneman, George Czerny, James Victor and Robert Weaver.
The School of Fine Arts has been a leader in art and design education for over six decades. The teaching staff, consisting of prominent industry professionals, a dynamic educational program and an emphasis on critical thinking, make the School a catalyst for innovation and the development of the profession. More than 6,000 students in Manhattan and 35,000 graduates in 100 countries make the School of Visual Arts one of the most influential world art communities.
