Show "Classics on the Palace":
a musical gift available to everyone

On May 27, from 21.00, the show "Classics at the Palace" again invites residents and guests of St. Petersburg to become spectators of large-scale open-air classical art in honor of City Day - the Foundation Day of St. Petersburg.

The tradition of holding public concerts by stars of the world classical scene against the backdrop of urban architectural landscapes this year celebrates its first small anniversary - five years. In honor of the City Day - the Foundation Day of St. Petersburg, the evening program will feature the most beloved and popular classical works by Rossini, Verdi, Bizet, Kalman, Puccini, Strauss, and some of them performed by People’s Artist of Russia Anna Netrebko. This will be the premiere open-air performance of the prima world opera in St. Petersburg.

Together with her, soloists, who are world famous and traditionally represent the domestic opera school, will appear on the stage near Zimny. So, the audience will be presented by a laureate of international competitions, a guest soloist of the Bolshoi Theater of Russia, winner of the Honorary Medal named after Gianandrea Gavazzeni Yusif Eyvazov (tenor); People’s Artist of the Republic of Bashkortostan, laureate of international competitions, soloist of the Mariinsky Theater Ildar Abdrazakov (bass); world-famous Russian opera star Olga Peretyatko (soprano), bright soloist of the Mariinsky Opera Company, Oksana Shilova (soprano), soloist of the Moscow Novaya Opera Theater and guest soloist of opera scenes from Russia and the world Vasily Ladyuk (baritone), brilliant soloist of the Bolshoi Theater of Russia Agunda Kulaeva (mezzo-soprano), soloist of the Moscow Novaya Opera Theater and guest soloist of the Bolshoi Theater of Russia Georgy Vasiliev (tenor) and others.

According to the already established tradition of the “Classics at the Palace” seasons, all musical works will be performed by the Mikhailovsky Theater Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov, which will give a special status and high aesthetic tone to the coming evening.

The Classics at the Palace show will also take place with the participation of the SoGlasie Youth Choir led by Pavel Teplov, dancers of the Ballet Theater Konstantin Tachkin, the St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theater named after Leonid Yakobson, as well as the collective of the unique Theater “Wandering Dolls of Mr. Pejo” culture of carnival, grotesque and buffoonery, which will immerse the viewer in a masquerade atmosphere with reincarnation and secret intrigue.

The intrigue of the dance will consist of fragments from the masterpieces of world choreographic art performed by the Prime Minister of the Berlin State Ballet, Din Tamazlakar, and the prima ballerina of the ballet troupe of the Berlin State Opera, Yana Salenko.

Traditionally, special attention will be paid to the design of the scene. Bright stylistic finds, which even the most inexperienced spectator will certainly notice and appreciate, will create the atmosphere of a palace ball, which suddenly spills out a magical whirlwind of colors, sounds and movements onto Palace Square. In the flickering waltz of light, the familiar space will be transformed, and ceremonial palace interiors will open to meet the audience. Behind the light, as if nonexistent colonnade, a view of the magnificent gates of the Winter Palace will open. The baroque beauty of its facade will be emphasized by a magnificent gilded chandelier with a diameter of 2.5 meters, consisting of 32 small chandeliers and 2,500 crystal pendants. A wide staircase framed by a wrought-iron gilded lattice and decorated with lush candelabra will complete the framing of the festive event.

From any point in the improvised concert hall, what is happening on the stage will be clearly visible thanks to the large-sized LED video screens that will be installed on Palace Square.

For those wishing to attend the concert, free seats will be organized.

The project will take place on the initiative of the Government of St. Petersburg with the support of the Committee on Culture of St. Petersburg.

The St. Petersburg premiere of the open genre took place near the walls of Mikhailovsky Castle in 2012: brilliant performances by Maria Guleghina, Vladimir Galuzin and other opera soloists, a virtuoso performance of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic named after D. Shostakovich led by People’s Artist of Russia Nikolai Alekseev, the choreographic crescendo of the golden fund of world ballet - all this unusually rich palette of classical art presented over several evenings, shocked the audience and gathered a huge number of enthusiastic responses.

Since 2013, the annual spring open-air of classical art has been moved to the space of Palace Square. The Gala of World Opera and Jazz Stars 2013 conquered the audience with performances of the legendary Igor Butman and rising stars of the Russian and world classical stage, soloists of the Mikhailovsky Theater ballet Irina Perren and Marat Shemiunov, European and Russian ballroom champions Valeria Bushueva and Andrei Buschik.

In May 2014, an ancient temple of arts, improvised against the backdrop of the facades of the Winter Palace, world-class stars such as Elina Garancha, Massimo Giordano, Hibla Gerzmava, Ildar Abdrazakov, Veronika Dzhioeva, Vasily Ladyuk, Oksana Shilova, Dmitro Popov, Sergey Dogadin honored their presence and the Mikhailovsky Theater Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov.

The headliner of the palace ball - 2015, which attracted over 20 thousand spectators, became the inimitable Dmitry Hvorostovsky. A classic opera singer, he, for the sake of talking about love with the St. Petersburg audience, made a creative compromise and included works from the infrequently performed operetta genre in the repertoire.

Dmitry Korchak, Valentina Nafornitsa, Ekaterina Lekhina, Dmitro Popov, Anna Aglatova, Olesya Petrova, Alexey Dolgov participated in the constellation with the great baritone in the festive evening. A special guest of the program was the virtuoso violinist Alena Baeva, one of the few musicians in the world to perform with the unique instrument of 1697 by Stradivarius. I did not leave indifferent even the most capricious spectators of the show-tom band Bad Boys of Dance (USA), whose whirlwind dance fusion with elements of acrobatics, rock’n’roll and academic ballet pas made a splash.
