"The Horsewoman" is a painting by the Russian artist Karl Bryullov, painted in 1832 at the request of Countess Yulia Samoilova. Even on the dog’s collar the artist depicted the surname Samoilov. The picture was first exhibited in 1832 in the Brera Gallery in Milan. Then the canvas was at the Countess to her bankruptcy in 1972 when the picture was sold. In 1896 the "Horsewoman" was purchased for the Tretyakov Gallery.
Description of Karl Bryullov’s painting The Horsewoman
"The Horsewoman" is a painting by the Russian artist Karl Bryullov, painted in 1832 at the request of Countess Yulia Samoilova. Even on the dog’s collar the artist depicted the surname Samoilov. The picture was first exhibited in 1832 in the Brera Gallery in Milan. Then the canvas was at the Countess to her bankruptcy in 1972 when the picture was sold.
In 1896 the "Horsewoman" was purchased for the Tretyakov Gallery. At first it was presumed that the countess herself was depicted on the canvas, but art historians, having studied later paintings by Bryullov, were able to prove that this was not the case. The painting depicts Giovannina and Amalicia Pacini - pupils of Countess Julia Samoilova. The artist called his painting "Giovanin on Horseback." In Italy there are engravings of this painting, which is considered a portrait of the singer Malibran, who is quite famous and accounts for the sister of Pauline Viardot.
The painting conveys a walking scene. It depicts the moment of returning home when Giovannin rides up to the porch on a raven horse. Bryullov’s composition "The Horsewoman" is filled with dynamism - everything in it is in motion, frozen for literally a second, in order for the artist to capture. The raven horse beats its hoof, hyped up after a walk, and the dog, with its name collar, rushes under its hooves, joyfully greeting Jovanin. Amalicia, Jovanine’s little half-sister, is also depicted on the canvas. She is dressed in a pink dress and green shoes. But most of all, it is her enthusiastic gaze as she looks at her half-sister Jovanin.
The picture is full of joy at seeing her after a brief but still absence. Watching her takes one’s breath away and the viewer seems to plunge into the joyful atmosphere portrayed on the canvas by the Russian artist Karl Bryullov, who was able to convey so sincerely and honestly the atmosphere that reigned at that moment in the Countess’s estate.

The most stunning painting is by Bryullov. When I saw it for the first time, I couldnt take my eyes off it for a very long time! Its divine!!!

Karl Brullov is the author of many wonderful portraits. Among them are ceremonial and narrative portraits of luxurious beauties. One of the most famous portrait paintings is The Rider, painted by Brullov in Italy in 1832. In this work, the artist combined a domestic scene with a formal equestrian portrait.
The painting has an interesting plot and amazes with its richness of colors. It depicts a young woman returning on a magnificent black horse from a morning walk, and a little girl meeting her on the balcony.

I saw this painting for the first time when I was five years old. I admire the grace of the rider. As a child, I was amazed by the clothing: the weightless veil, the heavy silk of the dress. And the hairstyle? Even for a little girl, its perfectly styled with beautiful curls. Its such an incredibly perfect painting. The subject matter seems simple, but every detail is like something out of a Grimms fairy tale.

Karl Brullov achieved a breakthrough in equestrian portraits with his work The Rider. The sheer scale of the painting allows one to appreciate the genius of the artist.
In 1832, Italian newspapers praised the painting with various metaphors, each review attempting to express gratitude for the masterpiece seen.
The painting has its own history. The canvas depicts two pupils of Julia Samoilova – Amalia and Giovanna Pacini.
Currently, the State Tretyakov Gallery is responsible for preserving the painting. The Rider still does not go unnoticed. Brullovs intention to combine simplicity with grandeur, to convey the temperament of the girls, their poetic souls, was not only successful but surpassed human capabilities.
So, what fate lies within this work? Northern Italy, Milan, 1832. A noblewoman, Countess Samoilova, wanted to capture the beauty of her young pupils. To whom could she entrust such a responsible task other than her close friend, the artist Karl Brullov? The girls were from well-known families. One of them was the daughter of Giuseppe Pacini, who gained fame for his musical talent, and the other was a close relative. The artist placed a spirited horse at the center of the work, with Giovanna riding it. Despite the fiery nature of the horse, the girl is proud and confident, holding her posture. To the left, we see a balcony, towards which the younger Pacini has run. In the background, there is a park, its dark tones creating an evening, soft atmosphere.
The portrait is built according to classical forms beloved by ancient artists. The rider and the horse form a triangle. Such a composition is characteristic of Titian, Velázquez, Van Dyck, and Rubens. Although these compositional schemes are somewhat outdated, Brullov managed to give them new life, bringing freshness. It was the figure of the little girl that made the painting unlike ancient methods of representation. This little one contains so many immediate feelings that they balance the coldness and grandeur of the central part of the painting.
Milan was the first to see the work; Samoilova showed it to her guests. The Russian poet and translator V. Zhukovsky, who arrived in Italy in 1838, was also fortunate enough to admire the painting personally.
After this, the canvas remained lost until the end of the 19th century. The Countess faced poverty and had to move to Paris. Despite the difficulties, she did not sell the painting, but at the twilight of her life – in 1875, she had to part with her beloved Rider.
It was rediscovered again in 1893. The Rider was put up for sale by some French merchant. P. Tretyakov was immensely impressed by the painting and added it to his collection. Thats how Amazon (or Rider) ended up on the walls of the gallery. Italian art connoisseurs called K. Brullov a genius when they looked at this canvas.
The amazing combinations of shades, just imagine how harmonious the pink color of the dress is with the black, velvet hair of the horse and the white tones. This complex palette, contrasts are surprisingly combined into a complete atmosphere that captivates the eye. The Rider is the creation of a 33-year-old artist who still had to walk the path to fame and write not one masterpiece...
There are no sisters depicted in the painting. On the plaque are not only their surnames and first names but also their fate: Giovannina, the niece of the countesss second husband, a young French doctor and opera singer, Pierre Antonin Perri, is riding a horse towards the villas terrace. Standing by the railing, watching the beautiful rider, is Amacilia, the daughter of the composer Giovanni Pacini.
Considering that the authors publication contains many references to authentic historical materials, I think we can believe in this version. Moreover, many people know about Amacilia Pacini from another painting by Karl, where she is depicted with Julia Samojlova.
The girl clearly posed while sitting in a chair: one wouldnt be able to stay on such a horse for long with that expression, especially not gracefully from the side. And please correct me if Im wrong, experienced equestrians.
Giovanna (the older one) is simply a nymph, an Amazon, a beauty!
