Above the scene, enclosed in circular frames, are symbolic representations of the dream. On the left, tall stalks of grain are depicted, representing abundance. On the right, emaciated cattle are shown near water, symbolizing a coming famine. The architectural setting, with its grand pillars and arches, along with the distant landscape visible through an opening, adds a sense of formality and regality to the scene.
The subtext of the painting lies in the power of divine revelation and interpretation. Joseph, through his God-given ability, is able to foresee a coming crisis and offer a solution, thereby elevating his status and averting disaster for Egypt. The visual contrast between the plump grain and the starving cattle clearly illustrates the duality of the prophecy – periods of plenty followed by severe scarcity. The overall composition highlights Josephs wisdom and authority, presented as a gift from God, in contrast to Pharaohs bewilderment.
