Against a dark background, there is a figure of a person.
He is a genius, a source of fame and pride for all of Russia.
He glorified his era with music.
On Earth, he is like a messiah.
In the darkness, two bright spots stand out:
A face and a musical notebook with a hand.
The hand hovers above the notes:
Partially covering them with itself.
He leans on the notebook,
Physically and figuratively striving forward,
To create a new, vibrant motif for ballet,
Or to enchant with an opera,
Or with his melodious romance.
After listening to it, you feel inspired to live,
So that life sounds beautiful and is not boring.
The hand resembles a wing,
Deprived of the ability to fly.
Sometimes, life was overshadowed by evil,
And often surprised with its twists and turns.
All this can be seen in his face:
Loneliness and shyness are visible there,
As well as an intense gaze. Like a creator,
He also possesses modesty.
The geniuss face is beautiful.
Intelligence and talent are visible in it,
An piercing gaze, and a semi-circle
Of gray hair in the hairstyle creates a sense of detachment.
The artist managed to guess,
And convey the tragic mood,
That he could observe firsthand,
In moments of creativity and inspiration.

The man holds sheet music in his left hand, which rests upon it. The presence of this musical notation offers a direct clue to his profession or passion – he is clearly engaged with the world of composition or performance. The sheets appear worn, hinting at frequent use and perhaps a dedication to his craft.
The artist’s brushwork is loose and expressive, particularly evident in the rendering of the dark suit and background. This technique avoids rigid detail, instead prioritizing an overall impression of texture and depth. Light falls primarily on the mans face and upper torso, highlighting these areas while leaving the rest in relative shadow. The limited palette – dominated by blacks, greys, and subtle highlights – reinforces a mood of solemnity and introspection.
Beyond the straightforward depiction of a gentleman with sheet music, subtexts emerge from the portrait’s composition. The darkness surrounding him might symbolize the challenges or complexities inherent in his creative process, or perhaps allude to periods of personal struggle. His gaze directed away from the viewer suggests an inward focus, a man absorbed in thought and feeling. The overall effect is one of quiet dignity and profound intellect – a representation not merely of appearance but also of character.
