When one looks at I. Levitan’s painting "Autumn Day. Sokolniki," one involuntarily thinks, "Did Levitan paint this painting?" Yes, here is the Levitan sky, high and deep. Huge white clouds are floating across the gray autumn sky. A damp haze hovers in the air. No rain, but it’s about to happen. Levitan pines, mighty, aspiring, standing high impregnable wall on both sides of the alley. The giant trees, blocking each other, protect the quiet autumn, hidden in the rare bright colors of leaves of the young maples standing at a distance from each other.

When one looks at I. Levitan’s painting "Autumn Day. Sokolniki," one involuntarily thinks, "Did Levitan paint this painting?"
Yes, here is the Levitan sky, high and deep.
Thin trees have not yet completely shed their yellow leaves. They are scattered in bright, even patches along the park path.
The sandy path, yellow as autumn itself, goes far away, beyond the pines, into the sky. The foliage, already fallen, is piled along its edges. It seems to frame the light path. It runs between the greenery of grass, on which the fallen yellow leaves also stand out.
The painting clearly shows a broad manner of writing. The artist clearly marks the trunks of trees, their crowns, foliage. With the help of blurred colors creates an airiness of the landscape, conveys the autumnal dampness and silence.
All over the canvas one can feel the loneliness and never-ending melancholy and sorrow. These feelings are emphasized by the dark figure of a woman walking lonely towards the viewer. It is this figure and confuses connoisseurs of landscape painter Isaak Levitan.
No, it was not the great master of nature paintings depicted a woman in black. It was done by N. Chekhov, the brother of the famous writer. Perhaps clearly feeling the loneliness of his painter friend, Nikolai Pavlovich decided to enhance the impression by including a human image in the landscape.
Despite such dissonance and "not Levitan’s" manner of depiction, "Autumn Day. Sokolniki" is the first painting of the famous artist, which was purchased by P.M.Tretyakov.

Its a very interesting and beautiful painting that evokes both happy and sad feelings!
A beautiful painting. It expresses different emotions simultaneously... This is both very pleasing and slightly sad at the same time.
I want to write an essay and Im looking for a way to download it online based on this picture.
The painting evokes both happiness and a certain sadness. The landscape, with its combination of green summer grass and already yellow spring leaves, creates a feeling of peace and joy. However, the woman depicted in gray (dark) tones adds to the atmosphere and creates a sense of sorrow and unease.
Yes, yes, yes!!! The painting is magnificent and deserves praise.
Well, what can you do?

Where can I buy it?
Helen, please order a copy; the artists are waiting for you.
The painting expresses loneliness, the dreariness of everyday life, and the uncertainty of feelings...
I think this painting evokes a warm sadness and tenderness. Although it may not be perfect, it shows the work of a great artist. Whether or not the viewer has walked along the paths of the park in Sokolniki during autumn, Levitans landscape so perfectly captures the feeling of autumn, and the artist so skillfully conveys the vibrancy of the colors. It is simply superb! In my opinion, this painting is magnificent!!!
It feels like Im familiar with this place somehow. It evokes a sense of pleasant memories from the past. Overall, its vibrant and full of talent!
The painting is good, but the composition isnt very interesting.
Here is a description of Levitans painting Autumn Day. Sokolniki:
In the painting by I. I. Levitan, we see an overcast autumn day. A dark, almost black forest hangs over a country road along which a young woman in dark clothes walks. The gray sky with heavy clouds promises bad weather and cold.
On either side of the narrow path, bright green grass still unaffected by the cold is washed clean by recent rain. And the young trees seem to glow with golden tops, reaching towards the sky, breaking up the gloomy landscape with reminders of sunshine.
A dreary bench on the roadside looks lonely, but the womans brisk walk along the light path disappearing into the distance inspires confidence that after the bad weather, sunny and pleasant days will come, filled with light and goodness.
A deserted alley with a road stretching into the distance… Who is she, this mysterious young woman, walking alone past the colorful trees? She is like a solitary bird, flying on wings of sorrow. Her slender, dark silhouette strikingly stands out against the autumnal landscape. Thoughtfully holding her chin, she lowers her head, hoping to hide from the bad weather. Cold puddles, covered with yellow, withered leaves, greedily splash miniature feet. And only rare raindrops are about to fall from the heavy gray sky and cry in unison with the unhappy soul. The forest is falling asleep. Shedding its faded, emaciated covering, it doesnt notice anyone around. Neither the woman, nor the rain, nor the sadness. It is like a symbol of societys indifference, unable to see the problems of those around it. A lonely bench stands as an allegory for a forgotten woman. Perhaps she will still find hope and peace ahead.
It is these deep feelings and experiences that Levitan’s masterpiece in oil paints evokes in me, a work he created back in 1897.
Autumn Day in Sokolniki, painted by Isaac Ilyich Levitan in 1879, depicts a solitary woman strolling through a park on the foreground. Her clothing suggests that the scene takes place in the 18th century. The weathered bench in the painting adds to its overall sense of melancholy. In the background, a deserted path stretches into the distance. Autumn has just begun, and there are very few yellow leaves yet.
The painting primarily evokes feelings of loneliness and sadness. Looking at it can make one feel colder inside. In his work, Levitan clearly expressed how a simple change of season can affect a persons emotional state.
Autumn day. Sokolniki Park. Composition.
It might seem that what draws viewers to Isaac Levitans painting Autumn Day. Sokolniki Park? At first glance, it resembles any autumn landscape. But if you linger and look closely...
The canvas is literally imbued with the atmosphere of autumn. The blurred outlines of trees, played by a gusty wind, merge in places into a solid spot, which envelops the picture in melancholy. Other trees, quite young, stand uncertainly and isolated, dressed in gold. Another moment – and a gust of wind seems to threaten them. In some places, the grass has faded; its colors have been lost in the distant summer. A solitary bench stands there, no longer attracting people in such weather. Although the clouds do not cover the entire sky, the sun does not illuminate it either, so the celestial gray tones add drama to the painting.
But the main focus of the canvas is the path covered with yellow leaves that stretches into the misty distance among the trees, and a woman walking on it – the only person in this wilderness. She is wearing black clothes, so her presence does not refresh the landscape but adds to its gloom. Her silhouette creates an impression of haste, as if the woman is tired of the wind and cold and wants to quickly take shelter from the unfriendly nature.
Thus, Levitan created not just another banal landscape but a whole story imbued with a certain melancholy.

When you look at Levitans painting Autumn Day. Sokolniki, a feeling of poignant sadness immediately arises. Perhaps the artist himself felt the same way, being exiled from Moscow due to his Jewish nationality. The canvas depicts a dreary landscape that evokes feelings of hopelessness and autumnal depression. A lonely path, covered in yellow leaves, stretches into the distance and merges with the horizon. Along the narrow road grow chestnut trees dressed in golden foliage, and above them looms a stern coniferous forest like a black wall. The sky is joyless, covered in clouds. Apparently, a heavy rain will soon begin.
But unexpectedly, a detail catches your attention, unnoticed at first glance. A woman in dark clothes is walking along the path. She moves silently forward. Its striking how sharply this figure contrasts with the faceless landscape, appearing mysteriously from nowhere. What is this beautiful stranger doing in this desolate place on a gloomy, overcast day? Immediately, various fantasies come to mind: the girl got lost in the forest and finally escaped; she is walking along the path and enjoying the riot of crimson colors; or perhaps she is not a real person at all, but a phantom of a lost soul, which usually appears before the start of a thunderstorm. The female figure depicted in the painting Sokolniki remains for me a peculiar mystery, shrouded in an aura of secrecy. I hope that the girl finds her way home and embraces her loved ones. I dont want to believe that she is destined to wander forever under the farewell rustling of autumn leaves.

Dear admirers of the brilliant Russian landscape painter Isaac Levitan, please do not disregard the artists compositional intent in your comments. The female figure is not a phantom; she is a real person depicted by Nikolai Chekhov, the brother of the great Russian writer Anton Chekhov.
The first artwork that P. A. Tretyakov purchased from the 19-year-old artist was...
A wonderful painting by the young Levitan and his friends (?) I would like to see all versions of this painting. How can I do that? I remember one particular version, but I cant find it. Please help!
